Alienware 15R2 Plugged not charging

Hi

I have an Alienware 15R2 laptop and recentry started showing when on AC the "plugged, not charging" on various percentages of the batters (22%, 44%, 47%, 80%). I have followed all instructions in here  on a Dell website with no luck. When I try to decharge, the battery goes down to 0% and stays there for another 30 minutes (at 100% CPU usage staring at 44%). It seems it is a calibration issue, however obviously decharging and charging (with PC switched off) didn't do the trick.

Any help will be very appreciated!

Kind regards

Marek

Hi,

Update the BIOS to the latest here:

http://dell.to/2koLcdM

Then turn the system off > unplug the AC Adapter > perform a power drain > plug the AC adapter back > enter the BIOS and check if the AC Adapter is being recognized.

Let me know!

Hello, I was about to list my Alienware problem on this site and noticed your post.  Because of my Alienware issue I choose to buy a new Lenovo laptop which had the same issue you are describing.  I've spent many hours researching this issue online and on the phone with Lenovo and Microsoft (MS).  There has been a MS post for year that MS refuses to address.  MS says the issue is due to hardware/software not MS Windows however, in my experience I would get the error after 1) my first MS Win 10 update 2) after using the trial version of MS Office pre-installed on the laptop which downloaded an update when I used it 3) after a second Win 10 update.  There are many steps to try but they seem to only work for the short term.  I made a post listing the different methods to try and help people and save the hours I spent.  Unfortunately, I received a replacement laptop and it also worked fine until the first Win 10 update.  So, I sent both back because eventually your battery will run to 0% which is very bad on lithium polymer (LiPo) and Lithium Ion (LiIo) batteries.  Running to 0% can immediately ruin the battery and they are expensive!  I hope this helps.  Here's my post with other things to try: answers.microsoft.com/.../fb60e17f-26e2-4882-a269-43576699a506

Hello,

I have done as you said and while I have already updated bios before, it does recognise the adapter. I am trying to charge it now while in the diagnostics windows. The main problem is still that the computer recognises 100% battery as about 40% and then remains in 0% for an hour. I have also tried to delete and re-scan for battery drivers, which also didn't work. The battery shows the low percentage also under linux, so I doubt it is OS related.

My experience is with a Lenovo X1-Carbon Gen-2 (2014).

The X1-Carbon's battery has an embedded micro-controller. Basically, that makes the battery an independent computer of sorts. It has it's own firmware, can be reprogrammed (with Lenovo software tools), and it runs it's own programs.

It's job appears to be to monitor health, properly recharge, and generally control the large amount of power inside the LiPo battery cells. It can even make it's LiPo battery inert or temporarily dead during servicing.

I assume recent laptops and ultrabooks from other manufacturers (HP, Dell, Clevo, etc.) use similar battery technology and configuration.

Try this: Access BIOS, and press FN+X, then restart.

Also, is there a way for you to try another AC Adapter?

I have tried with no effect. Also I tried another charger (a friend has the same laptop) and it didn't help. The battery checks out healthy and the battery life is still very good. It simply bugs me that I cannot know how much charge I have left.

Looks like a calibration problem. It's Windows 10, not reading well what's left for the battery. You can try a manual calibration here:

Hi Eimy,

I am with a similar problem with my Alienware 15 R2. I already updated the BIOS and all drivers. I bought a new power adaptor 240W from Dell, but the problem persist :/

I performed a power drain, plugged the Adaptor again, but it didn't recognize the power adaptor. I entered on the BIOS pressing F2 and I figured that if I unplug the power adaptor and plug it back, the BIOS recognize with random values, first it said 45W, later showed 240W :/

I pressed Fn+x but nothing happened.

I already performed a full test (40 min) to detect problem, but Dell says that there is no problem (Support for Alienware 15 R2 | Dell US )

What should I do next?

Arjun, from where did you get the battery? It's the original one from Dell? I see it's been one month now, have you got it resolved yet?

It's the original one and it's getting worse I was hoping dell would step

up and warranty the battery I paid 1500 bucks for this laptop and love it

but I'll have to buy one from ebay for 62 bucks why can you help me ?

Thanks mike

No, actually I'm facing this issue also on 17 R2. Battery is dead and asking me to replace it on every boot-up. Dell doesn't have this battery in stock. I've been running this laptop on AC adapter from last few months. No one to help. And I don't trust them anymore. People in my circle often ask me for laptop suggestions; I'll never advice anyone to go for alienware or dell in future.

Also, after reading arjun's comment, I think it won't make sense to replace the costly battery and still stuck with the issue.

Dell SHOULD do something to resolve the issue. My service tag is
