Alienware 17, GTX 770M

Hi all,

I have a new Alienware 17 with the GTX 770M GPU (3GB) and there's something that worries me a bit: when it's on, no matter what I'm doing or what the temperature of the GPU is, the fan is always at a 100% speed (checked with TechPowerUp GPU-Z). Is that normal? Will that decrease the life of the fan or damage something in the long run? Would it be good if I tweaked it a bit with a software? I was thinking about EVGA Precision X, but I don't know how it works and I don't want to mess anything up, it's not like I have the money to buy a new laptop or fix it.

Hello Valyrian!

Could you check on the temperatures of the system and let me know how they are. You can use the programs on this article to monitor the temperatures, they are very accurate.

These are the temperatures right after start up and already using Chrome and Steam (can't upload a screenshot, the size allowed to upload is just to small): GPU: 33 Celsius, processor cores 1-4 range from 45 to 52 degrees, changing constantly.

As you see, they're totally normal and low, but the GPU fans are anyways at 100% according to HWMonitor, or in GPU-Z, whenever the GPU is being used and no matter what the temperature of it is, the GPU fans are at 100%. When I play Dota 2 the temperatures can raise up to 60 degrees Celsius, but normal operating temperatures while playing are around 55 degrees.

Ok, so in that case I will recommend you to flash the BIOS to the latest version (you can find it on support.dell.com) and perform a power drain.

I seem to have the latest BIOS version, according to the drivers and downloads section, what do I do?

Just try flashing it again. There could be something corrupt in your EC fan table and doing that may clear it up.

I checked again, there's an update for my BIOS that came out yesterday, I'm going to installl it now.

EDIT: I don't know how long it takes, and I'm going out for the weekend in a short while, so I'll do it on sunday and let you know what happens.

me again (another account, failed the password 6 times on the other, checking if I can unlock it)

I re-flashed my BIOS, but the GTX770M fans keep on spinning at a constant 100%

You can try using this guide to control the fans, if the link in the guide doesn’t allow you to download the program you can use this other.

Just pay attention to the temperatures of the system if they go higher let me know.

Unfortunately, HWiNFO64 manual fan controls do not work on the Alienware 17 and 18. Unless something has changed in the last week or so, using it will cut power to the GPU fans, leading to severe overheating and thermal shutdown.

This works perfectly on the older systems, but not the new product line. It would be really great to have whatever problem is preventing it from working to be fixed. I think it is something in the EC.

Oh, I better not risk it then.

Do you have the same problem? Is it a problem at all or something I can live with?
