Alienware 17 R2 BSOD - VIDEO_TDR_FAILURE (igdkmd64.sys) after update to Windows 10

Yesterday I updated my gaming notebook from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10. Overall it works fine but I got now 3 times a bluescreen telling me video_tdr_failure and igdkmd64.sys which as far as i knows means a problem with my Intel HD graphics 4600. When I am using the laptop, sometimes it shows me flashing black screen, then after half a minute, it turns to blue screen.

I have already installed the newest Intel driver from Dell Support website, and I have checked my hardware by Dell Support Assist, and I didn't get any error message.

Anyone has any idea how to solve this?

Hello,

Try doing a clean installation of the Nvidia driver like it shows on the screenshot below. Click here for the driver download link. After installing the driver, test the system to confirm if it crashes again and let us know how it goes.

Hello, I'm still having this problem, When playing game on my laptop, and switch my game to desktop, I sometimes will get this error. The screen will freeze and turn to black with only the cursor, then after 5-10 seconds I will get the BSOD with the error "video_tdr_failure (igdkmd64.sys)".

GPU: NVIDIA Geforce GTX 980M (4GB) and Intel HD Graphics 4600.

I don't have this problem on Windows 8.1.

Hi,

Try reinstalling both the Intel and the Nvidia card drivers again. Also, make sure your system has the latest Bios firmware. Click here for the download link.

Hello, I've tried to reinstall my drivers before asking, and my BIOS is A05. I googled for a while, it says "the problem occurs when there is a need for some application work only with the Intel driver, not being compatible with the Nvidia driver." I bought my Alienware 17 R2 a month ago, and I haven't encounterd any BSOD problem on Windows 8.1.

And by the way, another question, I've updated my AlienRspawn from 1.8.1.71 to 1.9.0.22 on Windows 10, since then I noticed that my factory image date changed from 07/14/2015(the day I received my laptop) to 08/20/2015(the day I updated my AlienRespawn on Windows 10).  Is that normal? And can I still recover my system to Windows 8.1 using factory image by AlienRespawn?

Hi,

When you upgraded to Windows 10, did you do the update or a clean installation of Windows 10? There is no reason why updating Alien Respawn would delete the recovery partition and create a new one. Since you installed a newer version of the program, its possible that it may have created another recovery partition but it should still show the original. Try installing the 1.8.1.71 version again to check if it shows the original date on the factory image.

I did a update from Windows 8.1 directly using Windows Update. And yesterday when I trying to roll back to Windows 8.1 from Windows 10 using my factory image, my laptop got a BSOD. And now I guess I am totally messed up. When I boot, it will get BSOD and restart my laptop, again and again.

I got a "inaccessible_boot_device" message, then it says "A required device isn't connected or can't be accessed." "Error code: 0xc000000f".

Now I can't even use my newly-bought laptop, I felt so sad :(

And this is what I found from the Internet:

Looks like the newer version destroyed my factory image...

Hi,

Its possible you may need to reinstall Windows, do you get an option to access the recovery options? If not, try restarting manually several times to check if the recovery options come up.

i have the same problem as OP

the problem lies with dell not allowing us to update the newest 15.40.4.64.4256 version of the intel 4600,that is the proper version for win 10

and since we are stuck with dells 10.18.15.4256 version, which apparently does not support windows 10 we have to endure not being able to use our integrated gpu

p.s. uninstalling intel 4600 drivers restart laptop then disable intel 4600 drivers, this will solve the BSOD problem but you wont be able to use the integrated gpu so the laptops battery will drain faster

Hello, I've reinstalled Windows 8.1 using AlienRespawn recovery media USB a couple of days ago, and it reset all of my partitions, now everything is fine. Now I've re-upgraded to Windows 10.

However, after I reinstall Windows, I can see a partition listed in Optimize Drive with a drive name that starts something like “\\?\Volume”, I believe it was labeled as PBR IMAGE before since I accidentally saw the drive name in Optimize Drive before I get BSOD and reinstall my Windows. What should I do?

Also, I can see 4 unnamed partitions, 2 "DIAGS",  "winretools", "OS (C:)", "DATA (D:)" in Disk Management (I didn't see PBR IMAGE), I can't find any action except "Help" after I right-click those unnamed partitions. Is that normal? What are those unnamed partitions? What should I do?

I am having the same BSOD TDR problem as OP after updating to Windows 10.  Same system.  I updated nVidia & Intel drivers to latest versions, BIOS is also current.  My Logitech M325 wireless mouse also is acting up (disconnects/freezes/jumps) despite latest software, uninstalling get & reinstalling driver.  Not sure if related but both pros after Win 10 upgrade.
