Alienware 17 R3 - Dell unable to supply 8 gig on Graphics Card - FRUSTRATION FRUSTRATION FRUSTRATION

Has anyone had this issue?

Got my 17 R3 just before christmas. Ordered 8 gig in the 980m graphics card received 4 gig.

Dell customer support Offered me a Refund or a Graphics Amplifier! I have absolutly no use
for a Graphics Amplifier and I will not be able to buy the laptop I ordered for the same
money as I had £300 discounts and special offers.

They told me that if I had a replacement there was no guarantee it would not happen again.
They in effect told me they could not provide the laptop I ordered!

Since then the default configuration of the top 17 R3 on the Alienware web site comes with
Identical spec to the one I ordered (including 8 gig) and can, apparently, be delivered in
3 to 5 working days.

Does any one know what I can do or who I should contact. I have talked to them on the phone
with no resolution. I am now exchanging emails at a rate of one per week.

The last email contained the text 'Kindly co-operate with us in having the issue resolved'.

I have been informed that Dell is in 'Breach of Contact' but I do not know how to proceed.

Apart from the 4gig issue I really love the laptop and I really want the one I ordered.

Can anyone help?

Final closure.

I got my money back and bought a new one.

There was NO way round it.

I did get some money off for the hassel (10%), and the sales guy gave me some more discount so all in all I spent the same amount of money and I got a better machine.

My only issue is that customer support did not fulle explain the issues to  me in the first place so it dragged on for weeks.

Thanks for your comments.

I have the same issue, I ordered around Christmas and ordered the 980m with 8GB and received a 980m with 4GB and called support and they told me that I do have a 980m with 8GB in my laptop and the issue is with the BIOS and that they are working on an update, they said the laptop is not recognizing that it has 8GB due to not having the updated BIOS and they said they do not have any 17 R3 Laptops that has the updated BIOS and they are not sure when the update will be completed... Not to mention my laptop has issues with overheating right out of the box... I want the 980m with 8GB VRAM that I ordered! I have read posts that people have received the right one and also people who had the same issue and contacted support and got a replacement that had the right one... And they still have the 980m with 8GB as an option for purchase on their website, if they do not have the update then why are they still selling?!

dude, grab a graphic amplifier or get the refund. 8gb of the gtx 980m won't make that much of a difference from the 4gb version.

I need the 8gig as I do a lot of graphics work (as well as games) and I have the 4k screen, which is brilliant by the way.

I paid 2 grand for a laptop that is supposed to be the best of breed and you want me to compromise!

Also - I ordered 8gig, I paid for 8gig, Dell promised me 8gig. Are you trying to tell me Dell cannot provide 8gig.

I have absolutly no use for a Graphics amp. Why do you think I went for a laptop with this spec. If I have a Graphics amp I loose the portability. I might just as well have bought a desktop. If the upgrade from 4 to 8 made no difference then why bother with the option at all, why go for the best graphics card and then skimp on the memory.

If I have the refund, I am back to square one. It has taken months to find a laptop with the spec I wanted from a recognised (dare I say respected) brand name. I would have to start again.

When I ordered the laptop I had £100 off and 12% discount. I would not be able to get the same spec for that price. They may have come down is price since but not to the level I paid for it.

I want the laptop I ordered please!

Tell them to supply the Graphics AMP and A GRAPHICS CARD LIKE THE TITAN WHATEVER THEY ARE UP TO AND YOU WILL TAKE THEM UP ON THE OFFER :P

I have the same model only mine did come with the 8 gig video card and it's an awesome machine which did not boot right out of the box, I actually had to go into the BIOS and switch from Legacy mode and I had to uninstall the Killer Network software to get anything to work Netwise. But after all that it's been perfect with the exception of the Display Driver crashing every ten minutes unless I am playing a game lol.. But that's why we pay 2500 dollars, just to fix broken *** :p
