I have had this - or a similar problem - with my 17r3 from new, and have never been able to resolve it.
The laptop appears randomly to be unresponsive but in my case is not always related to any particular user action. This can occur from several times per week to once every few weeks. There is often no choice but to power cycle the laptop; no events are logged except for the unexpected shutdown that results.
What sometimes works though is to unplug the power input; the screen sometimes comes back after that.
This isn't just the laptop screen, I have an external monitor also connected, which also goes blank.
I don't believe this is just a display issue, as mail and newsgroup updates appear to halt while the laptop is in this state.
