Alienware 17R4 (2016) not working with UP3214Q via Displayport

Hi,

just want to ask if this is a known problem or if there is a solution for this.

As the subject says I have the brand new 2016 Alienware 17 with GTX 1070 and just don't get it to work with my UP3214Q monitor via DisplayPort. When I plug it in there is just a short flicker, then the monitor goes to power-safe and - according to Windows - there is not recognized external monitor.

Switching the notebook to dedicated graphics mode does not help.

Changing the cable does not help (just had one lying around).

The monitor itself is ok, it works fine with a MacBook and an older XMG notebook with GTX 980m, both via DisplayPort 1.2

The only way I can use the monitor right now is via HDMI with 30Hz, which is not really satisfying. This is kind of a true shame now that I finally have a machine that can run UHD with sufficient framerates ... and both being Dell products.

Oh wow, this should at least work, but things are not as they appear; if my understanding is correct, as on the 17R3, the HDMI port (actually, I'm shocked that it is still there) is of course limited by the HDMI spec, but is the only interface by which the GTX1070 is available.

The DP port is driven by the integrated graphics only - so not limited by the interface as the HDMI port is, but by the iGPU itself, even though in that configuration the eGPU can do some of the heavy lifting.

Worst of both worlds...and I'd be very happy if somebody can clarify my understanding of how this connectivity is configured, would love to be wrong.

Well I don't know about the internal wirings, but I was able to do a little test with a different monitor at work. The notebook works well with a U3415W via DP with its full 3440x1440 resolution at 60Hz in dedicated graphics mode.

So in short: The DP on the notebooks seems to be ok and the Nvidea card can use it.

It seems to be an issue with that specific monitor UP3214Q, according to other postings there seems to be some firmware issues with that one. But since it is also working well with other machines I don't really want to send it in out of the blue.

The good resp. bad news is that its indeed the monitor. After the latest MacOS update the MacBook also has problems connecting via DP. I.e. it only works some times after a cold start, which is what other people have reported as well.

Looks like the firmware is indeed fishy and I have to see how to resolve that.

But the Alienware Notebook is clearly not at fault here.
