Alienware Area-51 R2 USB devices constantly disconnecting and connecting again.

Hi,

I have had this issue since I first got my PC where certain USB devices constantly disconnect. This causes Windows 10 to play the disconnect sound and then the connect sound straight afterwards. This will occur every 2 seconds or so.

My mouse, keyboard, Steam Controller and XBox 360 Controllers all work perfectly.

Devices such as a USB Flash Drive, iPod, Phone (Samsung Galaxy S4 and Nexus 6P), USB hub and my webcam all constantly disconnect and connect. Plugging them into my laptop running Windows 10 causes no issues at all.

I have tried removing every USB device and connecting one of these devices only and the problem persists. I have tried all the fixes I found online such as changing the power settings to performance, disabling the selective suspend settings, disabling the device to be powered down to save power etc.

If I leave my webcam plugged in for long enough it eventually gets a warning icon in device manager and states it could not be started or sometimes vanishes totally.

There was another fix that I was never able to try and that is to disable USB 3.0 in the bios. I cannot find any setting to allow this.

Has anyone else encountered this and perhaps found a fix? My next step is to download another OS and try these devices and see what happens. Ubuntu currently downloading so I can give it a try.

I just tried booting into Ubuntu on a flash drive and it failed. I plugged my phone in at the boot select menu and I noticed that it too started charging and then stopped a few times.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Right.

It is done.

The wider USB 3 cable was easy.

The other 2 cables, USB and front panel took some time. Faffing around with the direction of the connectors and such. But everything appears to be working now.

Power and front USB ports work. No disconnecting.

Bonus... installed Command Center and I can still change the colour of the LEDs on my case.

But it reports my water pump as failed were as my new motherboard's software detects it. I disabled the new software and still the error occurs.

Now all I need is to get my fan speed under control. BIOS and software can handle that.

Hi Bob. thanks for your response.

i'm happy you got everything working. the fact you got AlienFX working is icing on a cake.
you don't need most of the command center stuff, so you might consider to disable it in the task manager > startup.

i might need the info sooner then i thought. yesterday my PC decided to freeze randomly and the Fan controll doesn't work properly anymore. i'm not sure, but i think i'm out of warranty now. so that's that.

i have few more questions.
your Asus board, what model is it exactly?
did you install the new command center version?
and last one. did you get the DVD Eject Button to work? if not, try to install MSI ODD Driver.

thanks again.

It is an Asus X99-A II. It is a socket 2011-3 LGA board. Can't find 2011 any more but my i7 works with it.

Pretty cheap but it got good reviews.

I installed version 4 of the Command Center.

Now that you mention it... the DVD drive didn't eject when I tried. I thought it was just because I hadn't connected my front panel.

i think your new board is better then the one before. i like MSI and Asus stuff.

the eject button is a problem for the most people with 3rd party mainboards. i think there is a driver missing but i'm not sure about it.

however. thnks again.

have a nice weekend.

Edit:

and as always, i made that stupid mistake in the Badge text message and can't fix it now. sorry.

Ha ha, no worries.

RIght... I found those DVD eject drivers on the Area-51 R2 driver page. Installed them... nothing. Drive works and all but no eject. Not an issue at the moment as I never use the drive. I'll look into it some time.

One other issue I picked up is my side panel LEDs are off when I start up my PC. If I unclip them and then push them back into the lock position again they light up. A bit odd. I'll look into that as well some time.

that's not good.

does atleast right click on the DVD drive and then eject work?

the side panel thing is a real problem for me. i hope it can be solved somehow.

when i replaced my fans i noticed something else. there are two sensors in the case. i guess they don't work with the new board either. right?

overall a lot of drawbacks with the new motherboard it seems.

yeah. in your case the new motherboard was absolutely necessary. for me, i found few workarounds for now. so i can wait until the new x299 plattform is out a little longer.

the light issues.... totaly not fan of it. atleast the windows eject funktion works.

please keep us updated if you find a solution for the side panel issue.

Yes, you can right click and eject. I tested that this morning.

I turned off the motherboard LEDs in BIOS, I'm not sure if that has affected the side panels but my power button stays lit if the PC is off. This is such a funny PC now with all its quirks.

Yes... I found those 2 sensor cables as well. They are a different shape and are keyed so they didn't quite fit the new sensor connectors. I think they might be for temperature. It isn't causing a problem at the moment.

I need to find some time to look into all this.

To me these are minor issues... but the panels not lighting up does bug me.

But in the end I am happy with my swapout.

I can finally use all USB devices

Long weekend coming up... I'll dig around and see what I can fix up.

The front panel LEDs are working, not the sides (unless you unclip and push them closed again while the PC is on).

i've been looking around on the Net. the side panel thing seems to be a problem for others aswell. look around at the Alienware Arena forums maybe you can find the solution or workaround there.

you know what i thought? what if Alienware releases the new Area 51 R3 by the end of this year? i could probably just order an Alienware branded x299 Mainboard from Dell and put it into the Area 51 R2. i think it might work. that would be great.

Edit:

i was thinking about the side panel issue....

next time when you fire up your PC, click on the AlienFX icon on the taskbar, disable the lights and enable them again. do the side panel lights turn on?
