Alienware Aurora R3 and Windows 10, can it be installed? Anyone done it?

Hi all,

Has anyone with a Alienware  Aurora R3 early 2011 system been able to get Windows 10 Pro to install, I know my system is not on Dell's list, but I get as far as two reboots, so it downloads Win 10 and installs and seems the reboot is an issue for it.

Could be have something to do with the UEFI boot in bios?

I do get a error code from Windows update which is

WindowsUpdate_C1900101" "WindowsUpdate_dt000"

Although first tme I tried, I got a different code.

Thanks

Phil

I have it running on an Aurora R2 from 2010, mostly without issues-- the network card keeps dropping out, and I had to switch to a USB one, but other than that, no installation issues.

thanks for letting me know.

Cheers

Hmm wonder what with a R3 is stopping it, someone posted in another thread on this same system Windows 10 issue from Dell I think about changing secure boot option in Bios.

Well I have latest V A06 bios installed and there is no option to change secure boot.

Does the R2 have that option and did you have to do that?

It seems to be a boot issue maybe, as it will reboot 3 times before Windows 10 Locks up, you can see from the circle dot thing, that it is not doing anything.

Cannot work out how a earlier version of same system had no install issues and my other PC a Dell XPS 730 which is also older system did it without an issue.Poster in that same thread made some suggestions about doing hard shut down and not let it reboot, I maybe try that.

Would be nice if Dell could suggest something. As I am not the only one with a R3 who has a problem.

Take this with a grain of salt, as I haven't re-read your original problem and may be mis-interpreting stuff I read trying to fix my networking problem, but the issue may be with the USB 3.0 drivers-- I think that I read that people couldn't perform a reboot with the drivers that were on the machine, however, they were able to shut down and restart.

Since the R2 still has USB 2.0, it's not affected.

I think that some folks were forcing a power shutdown during install to get it to work-- in other words, when it says "rebooting" and goes back to the BIOS screen, either kill the power or hold down the on/off switch until it shuts down, then power up again.

Again, grain of salt. it's late and I may have this totally wrong.

I do agree whole-heartedly with you that Dell should be showing more support here-- yes, my R2 is 5.5 years old. But steady upgrades over the years means that it's still perfectly sufficient for my needs, and I'm not happy that I'm forced to either downgrade to 7 or buy a new machine to get a working NETWORK card.

Thanks for reply and info, suggestons.

Does the R2 have Raid? Does it have in it's Bios a UEFI boot mode?

This problem is after Win 10 has all installed and it is on the 3rd reboot problem occurs, it is a boot issue, if I look at unit, the Alien lights are like they are when machine is in sleep or power saver mode.

I tried what some suggested on Windows 10 forum at MS, to stop al services bar MS ones via MS config, no luck and it cannot be my anti virus as I have same one installed on the XPS 730 which Win 10 upgraded to all okay.

Anyway I try hard shut down option, but something in the Bios is stopping Win 10 booting if you ask me and this is something Dell should be able to answer, why does a R2 and the R4 as the later they say has been tested to run with Win 10, why do those units not have this boot issue.

Re Network card, have you tried updating drivers, guess you would have.

What make model is network card?

Cheers

Phil

R2 has RAID, but I'm not using it any longer. I don't think bios is in UEFI boot mode.

I've been trying to update drivers with no luck, but I think I just got one to work today. It's hard to say if it's a fix or not, as the timing is intermittent-- sometimes I lose it after 5 minutes, other times it's hours.

Win 10 is just reporting back "Broadcom NetLink Gigabit Ethernet," I cant get a model number out of it. I know it's in the 57XX series, though.

Aurora R3

Windows 10 installed (upgrade from Windows 8.1)

reboot hang resolved by installed R4 USB 3.0 driver (Renesas_Integrated-USB-3-0_A00_R286402)

Alienware Command Center issues resolved by installing "CommandCenter_2012_CC27250"

Start Menu from MS fixed by installing Stardocks Start10

Lack of Linux like rollup windows resolved by installing Actual Windows Rollup

Fixed Calculator by install the old version from Windows 7(search google for install old windows calculator on windows 10 or go to Winaero and find the download link)

Return to the old Control Panel display settings: again from Winaero, but apparently I can't post links so you'll have to search Winaero for it.

A bunch of registry tweaks(I can't even remember them all).

Stable as a rock now.

Thanks for all that

USB 3.0 driver won't be any good for me as I am running Windows 7 64bit,

Although I just checked under Aurora R4 Windows 8 and 8.1 for that USB 3 driver and didn't find it, do you have a link to it?

I do have a Insprion Laptop running 8.1, yet to try that for Window s10 upgrade.

Going to install on a separate particion on another HD in system, Windows 7, and change boot in Bios from UEFI to other option and see if Windows 10 installs on that.

I tried the hard shut down suggestions, unless I wasn't quick enough to stop Windows 10 retstarting, when it gets the screen when you first see the Blue Windows 8 and 10 Icon, system hangs, I see briefly a DOS Command window flash up, which to me maybe suggests a command.exe issue stopping it booting up,

To the person who said to hard shut down, is that the section where Win 10 installs the Apps?

Thanks

Phil
