DELL-Kiran K kindly provided all the info you needed to know. If you're looking forward to upgrade to 16GB of ram, then you should go with 2 8GB memory sticks at either 1333 or 1600 Mhz. This video tutorial shows you how to install the new hardware.
That seems to be desktop memory, it won't fit in your system. Laptop memory has 204 pins against Desktop memory that has 240 pins.
If you're buying ram from an online store, I would recommend you to filter your search for laptops. Also it's cheaper to buy 2 8GB memory than a single stick of 16GB.

ok ok quick question...i'm trying to buy a memory upgrade online (i have the 6gb that came pre-installed with the system) and i am planning to install another 8 gb one
now the issue is that all the other specs regarding the ram checks out (1600mhz, SO-DIMM, DDR3, 204 pin) but there is no mention of the PC3-12800 thingy...is there ny way to check that. there is no mention of this detail on the sellers site or the main product website (links below)

Hi sach1888,
Alienware M14x R2 has two internally-accessible DDR3 sockets which have speeds up to 1600 MHz, dual channel DDR3 modules and a maximum memory of 16GB.
The requirements mentioned above should be checked while going for a memory module.
If you have further questions do reply to the same post.

I don't see why they wouldn't work. Should be plug & play. If you encounter an issue, you can return the item.
