Alienware M17X R3 Screen Beeps 8 Times with White Screen

Hello, I have a major problem. I bought an Alienware M17X R3 two years ago. Yes, I realize that I was stupid, that I shouldn't have bought a laptop that I found later was pretty much just a bunch of "fancy lights". Well I wanted quality, and that's what I thought I was getting. Well recently, all of a sudden, possibly from some sort of bump or slight fall I didn't notice, I don't know, the screen now turns white on boot and beeps 8 times, stops, and then repeats. I have heard it is an LCD problem, and possibly a loose or pinched cable. However, I looked at the manual, I looked online, and no one seems to be able to help with this particular brand of laptop. I wanted to take the screen off, and then disconnect and reconnect some of the cables, but I can't seem to find any consistent way of doing that. Some say slide it off from the top, some say pinch the sides, some say basically take the thing apart, I don't know. This laptop has no warranty, unfortunately, so I'm hoping for a quick and cheap fix, if not, I might just say screw it and get a new one, since alienware seems to have a lot of issues. Thanks for reading this, and please respond.

Hi Leichtergeist,

It is unfortunate that the screen is white and gives 8 beeps. This indicates LCD failure or a cable issue. Request you to try using the below link and try reseating the LCD cable:

Also you may try connecting a known good external screen and check if it works.

If this works then the screen has failed. You may contact the out of warranty team on 18002884410 (U.S only). They can check and provide alternatives.

If you have any other questions do reply to the same thread.

So we don't have to take off the actual screen, just follow the steps until we get to the blue cable underneath the keyboard and take it out and put it back in?

We reset everything, we took it apart and put it back together, and it still doesn't work., we're thinking of trying it out with an external monitor next.

Hi Leichtergeist,

It is good that you have followed all the steps. You may now try with a known good external monitor (if available). If this works then screen is failed and you will need to contact the out of warranty team as advised in my previous response.

Do reply with your answers.

The monitor does not seem to be working, the computer just keeps beeping and the monitor doesn't do anything. I even tried pushing the f6 key, holding fn down, to change screens, but it just turned black and beeped. Does this mean the actual thing is still working?

Also the monitor works on my partners laptop which is identical to mine.

Hi Leichtergeist,

As said by Kiran, an 8 beep code would normally mean an LCD failure as shown in this article, but I would recommend you to remove the discrete video card to confirm if you have a faulty video card.

Checkout this link to get the service manual of your computer to remove the discrete video card.

Unplug the laptop

Remove the battery

Hold power button down for 30 seconds or longer

While battery is still removed, plug the power supply back in

While holding the "Fn" button, press the power button, keep "Fn" Button held for a while.

Repeat steps a few times if it still beeps, it's important to hold the power button down initially for 30 seconds or more.
