Alienware M17x R4 GPU Upgrade
Hello,
I'm currently still using my trusty M17x R4 but the gpu (amd hd 7970m) is getting a bit old, is there any amd gpu I can upgrade to? I already did some research for the r9 m290x but there's not much of a performance increase unfortunately. Would like to find an alternative gpu, preferably amd, not a big fan of nvidia.

heh after running dual 980 M's in my M18X R2 .. trust me.. you would never look back..
one kicked the dual 680's it had.. and the dual 680's were better then the dual 7970's it had when I originally purchased.. but bare in mind its not a cheap upgrade for a proper plug and play video card..

Unfortunately I do not own an M18X R2, and for the 7970m vs 680m, they were exactly the same with only a minor difference in specific game titles. And yeah I know that the 980M is a popular upgrade, but I really don't like nvidia cards.

The m18x r2 was basically an upgraded m17x r4 bigger screen more had room dual cards otherwise much the same specs inside .. so I just gave you what I had done that works nice but cost was resiculous for plug and play no issues at all
Trust me the difference from the 7970 and the 680 having them side by side in same system a lot different then you think but that's besides the issue...
Apparently the R9 and also work well in the m17xr4 but apparently it's only minor improvement over the 7970 I got no experience with it so I can't say more then what I read ..
The red team tends to be cheaper on the price/ performance scale but also lack good driver support and have for many years as for nvidia honestly last year was first time I went with nvidia cause warranty on my m18x after 7970 failed they had none so upgraded me to 680s always thought and still do think nvidia is overpriced ...
But enough rant haha if wanna try the r9 280x by all means just make sure it's got a dell/Alienware bios on it as would be required for any video card you purchase
