Alienware M17xR4 crashing while playing games

Hi,

For the past 1 month, I am facing this peculiar issue.

Whenever I am playing any high graphics games, my laptop is shutting down automatically and it is restarting by itself.

It happens within 2-3 minutes of starting the game. There is no blue screen , it just crashes and while restarting it gives off a weird cracking sound.

This never happens when on battery power.

I had contacted Dell customer care as my machine is still under warranty.

They recently replaced the motherboard of my laptop but still the same issue persists.

Now they are insisting on replacing my AC adapter which supposedly will solve my problem and I am not sure about it.

Please help.

Any bluescreens or anything? Have you checked the temperatures while gaming?

Hi Luis,

No I am not getting any blue screen, the machine just seems to suddenly lose all power and crashes (and restarts immediately with a cracking sound).

Please suggest how to measure temperatures while gaming.

Also I am not sure I can note it down as the system crashes within 2-3 minutes of starting any high end game.

The word temperatures on the post above is linked to an article that will show you how to monitor them. You can use the GPU-Z logging feature to measure them and even if the machine restarts the log will be auto-saved.

Those are actually really normal temperatures, they don't seem high at all. Can you try the Prime95 test with HWMonitor and check on the CPU temperatures instead?

Hi Luis,

Thanks a lot for the timely help that you are providing.

As you said I used the GPU-Z logging to measure the temperature while gaming.

I observed that in idle state the temperature is around 57'C-58'C and it reaches to maximum temperature of 66'C and then my system crashed as usual.

Please confirm whether it is within the normal temperature range or not.

If required I can attach the log file for your further study. (Please mention how to attach a file here, I am not able to find any link for attaching anything).

Hi Luis,

As you instructed, I did the same.

I ran the Prime95 test with the HWMonitor running.

I found out the minimum temperature of my CPU cores was around 52'C and the highest temperature reached around 92'C.

Please compare with the normal temperature range and let me know.

92C is too high on the processor, that is probably what is causing the shutdowns. I would suggest you to repaste the processor.

Hi Luis,

Thanks for all the help and guidance.

I will perform the re-pasting as soon as possible.

Hope it solves my problem.

Thanks once again.

Hi Luis,

Recently the engineers from Dell not only re-pasted my processor but also replaced my laptop's motherboard, fans, heatsinks and the PSU.

But sadly the problem still now persists.

I am still now facing the same issue, more-over the engineer who worked on my machine was an inexperienced one and has done some damage to my Wi-Fi adapter.

Now I am stuck with a machine in which I cannot play games and cannot surf the net too.

On raising the issue, they agreed to replace my laptop's motherboard + Wi-Fi adapter + Graphics Card.

I am not sure whether it will solve my problem or not.

Is there any provision from Dell where they can replace my entire laptop?

The Dell engineers have already done aggravated the problem, I am not sure whether they are able to identify the actual problem of my machine.
