Alienware M18x-R1, Windows 10, screen goes black on login, or randomly after 10~min of use
Hello, I would greatly appreciate any kind of help i can get on this. I have had this M18x for more than 5 years now and never complained. Recently with windows 10 I am having weird black screens that pop out of nowhere, computer does not respond anymore, keyboard is lit, screen is on backlight but no activity can be detected (ctr alt del, or any other button except power does not have any effect)
funny part is it started end of 2016, could have been cause by a failed update of windows that started to cause those crashes, cant seem to find out what it is. Device manager says all drivers are up to date.
I love my computer and would not want to change it, it is an Alienware 18 Mx, used to run on windows seven and went through a few upgrades along the years. Now on windows 10.
Also the touch buttons below the screen are completely useless and even after downloading drivers for graphic card: AMD Radeon HD 6900M Series, nothing seems to respond whether it is the volume buttons, eject drive or any of the other buttons.
Please help it would be greatly appreciated

well sounds like a m18X R1 haha :) ..
part of issue is windows 10 since this computer was never really designed to run windows 10, although neither was my M18X R2 .. but I managed to run it just fine..
your biggest issue is no driver/program support for windows 10 from dell
OSD(on screen display) and ACC (alien control center) which control the touch buttons and lighting/ video card switching etc.. best you probably got is windows 7 drivers.. which can work if installed using compatibility mode usually .. but video drivers don't control these functions... OSD mostly does
if I was in your shoes honestly I would just backdate to original operating system and run that nothing wrong with windows 7 if I had my choice I would run it now over windows 10 with my X51 .. or install everything with windows 7 then update back to windows 10

Sounds like video card or driver failure. Check Event Viewer or crash logs.
AMD has pretty much dropped support for older AMD cards (pre R-???) under Windows-10. Left a lot of people with Laptop Switchable Graphics out in the cold (including AiO's).
Luckily, for reference design desktop cards (like my Aurora-R1's old original circa-2010 AMD-5870) Microsoft tossed me a driver and AMD-CCC (thru Win-10 Windows Update) that seemed to work ok. Not sure how it's turning out for similar vintage laptop cards.

thanks for the help! what do you recommend I do ? is my graphic card swap-able?
I checked Event Viewer but not sure how to read it, giving me a bunch of info under administrative events.
thanks for pointing me in the right direction!
