Alienware X51 i3 processor upgrade
I recently bought a new X51 with the i3 processor [link: http://www.dell.com/us/p/alienware-x51-r2/pd?oc=dpcwxy01s&model_id=alienware-x51-r2 ]
What i would like to do is buy the same processor that is in the i7. My only problem is i dont know if the sockets on the motherboard will be the same. does anyone know? i was on the phone with 5 different people from dell but none of them could help me. i also know the i7 has a higher power requirement, do i need to get a new power supply or will the stock one be enough? Thank you for your help.
Respectfully,
Anthony J Hart

Hello anthonyjhart,
First off, I would need to know how much power can your Power Supply actually yield to the computer. If you want, you can go ahead and send me in a PM your Service Tag and I'll look that up.
Second, the i7 Processors that we recommend on the X51 are i7-2600 -(8MB Cache, up to 3.80GHz) and i7-3770 (8MB Cache, up to 3.40GHz)
I hope you find this information useful.
Let me know if you need anything else.

It should be a straightforward swap -- it's unlikely anything but the CPU is required. That said, for warranty purposes, keep your i3 CPU. You'll need it if the system ever needs warranty service.

hi, thank you for answering, as far as what the power supply can yield, i have no idea. The whole computer is completely stock right now so whatever power suply comes with the thing, it has. the prossessor i want can be found here:
as far as i can tell, it is the same one that comes in the x51 i7 from dell
really, i would like to just throw it in and call it a day but im not as savvy as i would like to think when it comes to hardware so i just want to be sure. thank you for all your help
