Did you try updating the BIOS yet? If there is a newer version then I would try that first.

I don't have the m14 to check but go into the BIOS and look for suspend mode/sleep options. You should see something like S0, S1, S2 S3, S5 or something along those lines. You can try another sleep mode and see if that works. A USB device could also prevent it from waking out of sleep.

It's best to try it with nothing connected until you get it working.

Read this to help you get a better understanding: http://www.pcworld.com/article/225833/tweak_your_windows_pcs_sleep_mode.html

When I first bought my Area 51 the S3 option would do what yours is doing. I had to use S2 until Dell released a new BIOS to fix it.

ah ok sounds like a good place to start - thanks for the advice i will give it a try when i get home later to see if it resolves the issue. It would make sense that a bios reset may have happened when i was getting the post failure notifications which may have affected this mode. I will update later on the results :)

How Strange - Those settings are not available in the bios for the m14x however after changing the power settings around again it looks like i may have it resolved - set everything to sleep mode only and not hibernation and this has now resolved it. (Strange as i changed it from this as it was not working)

No issues with the motherboard as of yet again yet so hopefully all clear

Ok - New update - The laptop has now officially died... seems i was wrong about the hibernation the laptop is now getting the 7 beeps for the motherboard problems again and will no longer switch on. This problem seems to be very evident from others all around the web and there has been no general recall on the product which to me seems strange. I will put up an update when it comes to dell coming out to fix the laptop but i think i am unable to do this at the moment due to it being a public holiday...
