Alienware m17x R4 several issues
Hey everyone,
So I checked out the forums again, and I was looking for similar issues but I couldn't find the same issue anywhere (similar but not the same).
First I'm going to say all issues by themselves, and then explain how they might all be based on the same root issue, which I figured might be true from all I have read online.
First issue, when I want to boot up my laptop (not important if cold boot or restart) sometimes it happens that the system gets stuck on the alien head (POST process?) and if I leave it to be completed without interruption it can take up to 10min before it finally moves on the the windows loading screen which also then takes longer than usual, maybe 2min. What I do sometimes if I really don't have time to wait for up to 20min for the system to boot is, I just press the power button and the laptop turn off immediately (I don't have to keep the button pressed before it turns off), and I just turn it on again and 99% of the it works and it just takes 5sec to go through the alien head screen and the windows loading screen.
The second issue is, the famous "plugged in, not charging" issue, I had it for a while (2-3 months I think), and I thought that the battery was dead as I barely ever unplugged the AC, so I took the battery out and all was fine until the laptop started turning off at random times, not "shutting down" but just turns off as in, no electricity. I can still power it up immediately after that and it would go through the windows memory checks and everything and boot up normally again. After I plugged the battery in to see if it is the AC loosing connection from time to time, I figured that it might be a possible solution, but it never goes to "battery mode" and then back to AC mode, as you would expect if the AC was faulty and loosing connection every now and then.
So what I did is look up more options for the plugged in, not charging issue, and I attempted the method which seemed to help a lot of people solve the issue which is take out the battery, boot up, delete windows drivers for AC from device manager , turn off system, put battery back in and turn on. When I turned it back on, it kept switching between battery mode and AC mode (my guess is that was the system's doing while it was installing those drivers again and it had to switch from one to the other), anyway, it worked for a few minutes, and the second I thought there we go it did fix the issue it went back to not charging... Now the issue I have is it is switching between charging and not charging, the battery is at 6% and hasn't moved for a while, so I figured I should install a battery diagnostics tool to see if I can figure out what is wrong with it, so I installed BatteryCare. Neat little piece of software telling you everything about your battery. The reading of the BatteryCare software is as following:
Designed Capacity: 93240mWh
Total Capacity: 85650 mWh
Current Capacity: 5170 mWh (this is increasing every so often by a factor of 20 or so, maybe every 10min or more the nuber goes up by 20)
Charge/discharge rate: +655.4 W
Tension(VOLTAGE): 12337 mV
Wear Level: 8.14%
So, I am not the best with electronics and mWh and W and all those units, but after a short search on google it said that 1 mWh = 1.000.000 Wh. If that is the case, then my battery is switching between not charging and charging, but when it charges it is charging at a VERY LOW rate, which means it would take ages (maybe literally ages to reach 100%) for the battery to be charged.
Now I read that flashing the BIOS to the newest version might help solve the issue, but as you all know, you can not flash the BIOS without having at least 10% battery left. Is there a way to flash the BIOS to the latest version without the battery being at 10%?
Other than that, I have ran the alienware diagnostics and it said everything was fine, except that I noticed that during the diagnostics the AC kept switching between 240W to no plugged in, the whole time, and the system didn't do anything nor did it say that there is anything wrong with it.
So to complete my long post here, somewhere I have read that it all might be somehow connected, that the alien head boot screen is so slow because the system is getting very low power or something, and so on.. So what can I do to try and fix any of those issues. I am not under warranty anymore, and (as suggested in a previous post by a dell person) buying a 70-90$ charger to "start troubleshooting" is a bit too expensive for me, any other solutions which include running any sort of diagnostics, or opening the laptop or anything else and checking the hardware is fine but I would prefer a step by step instruction compared to the "yeah check the AC port" kind of instructions, because I am not rich to be able to afford another alienware in case I screw this one up, I saved up for a while to finally get one.
Sorry for the long post, please hit me with your best ideas, I really need to solve those issues.
