Alienware m17x r2 problems and questions
Hello I have Alienware m17x r2 radeon mobility 5870 crossfirex intel i7 quadcore 940x etc.
I have the following problem:I reinstalled the windows once and after that (or sometime after that) i started to experiance a freezing issue on start up.While the battery is removed and only the ac adapter is plugged in it crasheson start up (last time it did it was today when i uninstalled Amd catalyst profiles). When the battery is in and the Ac adapter is plugged in there is a high chance the computer to freeze at start up on the desctop screen or in "welcome" screen. The only way i can start the laptop is by removing the ac adapter after the windows is starting and plug it in after every single thing is fully loaded at desctop screen.
Another issue i have is when booting up there is unexplainable sentence""MBR error 3" or something like that
I have the following questions i asked in a previous post if i shall update the video cards' drivers and the answer was positive, so I did it and now i expereance poor performance on benchmark tests. For example with the dell drivers i have 14437 score in 3DmarkVantage and now I have only 7500p score. Is this some kind of a bug because someone said that the dell drivers are ancient and i shall use the amd recommended one.PC: I did clean install of the newest 12-8 drivers and the Catalyst crosefirex profiles.
I also am thinking for future to upgrade to a better performance video card/cards.What do you suggest the ati hd radeon 6970M crossfire, ati 7970M or th nvidia 680M. Is it this even possible and can this motherboard run 7970m in crossfire and the 680M in sli. WHich of the choices are avalivable and is it worth doing it ?

well as for the MBR error sounds like hard drive is failing..
for the 7970 Xfire and 680 SLI this option never exsisted for the M17X as heat and power consumption was to much then heat became issue ... as a single card it was available but the R3 and R4 M17X are single card only, this is probably the reason for the release of the M18X which is larger and gets i beleive a 330 watt power brick for the SLI/Xfire systems over the 240 watt the R2 has with sli/xfire:O

Is it possible to use a single 680m or 7970M on the r2?

well google is a wonderfull thing...
680M roughly uses 100 watts according to notbook check were as the 5870 uses roughly 50 watts each.. so basically the 680 uses the same as both 5870's and the same goes for the 7970 @ around 100 watts
your issues is more with hard drive and i would opt to replace it since it cheap, the video card is an OEM only and is 700+ US from dell or ebay is an options since 680M's are on high demand .....
