Alienware17 runs WOW only 30fps, I want to find the reason

Hi, guys,

I brought a new alienware17, whose graph card is AMD Radeon R9 M290X, but the frame rate is only about 20-40fps. I checked the AMD Radeon R9 M290X did working during I played WOW, with a GPU load 99%, and the driver is the latest. The reason I brought the laptop is I heard this GPU can achieve almost 200 fps. Could anyone give me some solutions, thanks.

You won't be getting 200fps mate ... I get about 80 fps on full max settings down to high 60s in raids and that's with the GTX 880m card  if your on max settings 40 to 60 on that card would probably be about right

Is VSYNC on in the graphics settings? you should def be getting more than 20-40fps. Also depends on your graphics settings and resolution. For example, I have a 980gtx in my desktop and in some zones with a lot of detail/people @ 3440x1440 it will get down to 30ish fps. If you aren't running at a high resolution, vsync is off, turn shadows down and watch your FPS go up.

Hi Cindy.  Can you tell us what your graphics settings are in WoW and what you are doing in game when getting these frame rates?  For example, I have the GTX 680M and I have my slider set to "Ultra" and running around in the zones I get around 60 FPS.  If I'm standing in my garrison hall I get 105fps.  However if I'm in a raid or LFR with lots of people running around and intense boss fight graphics it can drop to 30-35.  You're not going to get a consistently solid frame rate that doesn't drop down some when a lot of effects and action are on the screen.

I don't know who told you that you can get 200 fps but that's a pipe dream.

Hi, Mozartistic,

Thanks, my graphs setting is also Ultra, but  I disable Vertical Sync and Projected textures.  The tech support of Alienware helped me set the power to high performance, so now I can play with 30-60 fps.  I get 40 fps running around in my garrison. Better than before, but I think it should be way better since I am using such good GPU.

Cindy,

What resolution screen are you using?

1920x1080

Yeah its always going to vary.  40-50 FPS is plenty running high settings.  Not to mention if you did what I did and opted for the 1920x1080 screen it has to work even harder to run everything smoothly at that high of a resolution.  The bigger the size, the slower the fps.  I also use X-Plane 10 on this computer and it's super graphics intensive.

Your video card is fine if you can run Ultra with 30-60 fps.  Make sure to keep your vents and heatsinks dust free since you'll definitely be moving lots of heat.
