Area 51 ALX Front Bezel Problems

Hi All

Am having a slight drama with my front bezel and copying files over to drives/usb sticks connected to the far right port.  I have an iPad and HTC HD2 charging happily in the other two ports that face tot he right.

So far I've tried this and have the same issue with a My Passport Essential (500GB) and Lexar 8GB USB stick.  When I try to copy files to either it just sits there usually acquiring the files that need to be copied and then the status bar starts to move and always gets stuck about 10%.

When i plug them in now to this port it is coming up with a "Scan and Fix" prompt.  I have tried either ignoring that or fixing it but it doesn't seem to solve the problem.

Anyone have any ideas?

I also have a My Passport Elite plugged in via the back that is having no issues.

You might be over-amp-ing the ports. I think all those ports run from a hub built into the MIO-Board. Windows should complain about over-amp-ing but the MIO-Board might not be sending the signal properly.

Be sure those flash drives drives work in the back ports. If they do, unplug the cell phones from the front ports and try those flash drives in the front ports (with nothing else attached).

There is only so much power. Cell phone charging uses many amps of power. I would charge them from the back, or get a powered USB2 hub and charge them that way. I'm guessing they also communicate with the PC. If not, just charge them from the wall-wart.

Just a bit of an update and to clarify a few bits of information...

The Lexar was brand new and unused and I struggled to transfer about 20 5MP photos to it.  I did manage this but couldn't do anything else.

The WD Passport Essential is now having issues in all ports I have tried it in.  Including both the back and front of the machine.  It was not new but has been working fine through a WD TV for quite some time without issue.  I have tried formatting it again and I am still having the same problem.  I simply cannot transfer anything bigger than about 500KB.... agghh

The My Passport Elite has been fine and transferring large files, same with my My Book Essential (both 1 TB and 2TB and USB 2/3).

Thanks

Try them both on another computer to make sure they work. Just because they are new, doesn't mean they are working.

The Lexar should work formatted as FAT32. I think there is also a new exFAT, but I haven't tried it. The WD Passport Essentials should work formatted as FAT32 or NTFS. Be sure to always "Safely Remove" devices or Eject them from "My Computer"

Hi

Will give some of this stuff a try.  I haven't managed to setup my laptop yet so I will try them in that when i have a chance.

I've managed to get some 1GB files over finally.
It's still balking at the 7GB files though.  It's formatted for NTFS to allow larger files.

Actually I'm starting to wonder if this is not an issue with FIle Explorer and the transfer of large files over to portable/external devices?

I had this issue with mine and it was the file system i used. exFAT was awesome on my thumb drives but doesnt like my Passport. I think i went with NTSF for it.

Hi

I did a bit of hunting.  Seems it is not all that uncommong for 53 bit Widnows Explorer to have issues with file transfers.  There are a number of threads involving various external HD's and various systems.

I'm trying TeraCopy but it seems to have the same issue.  I've also tried turning my ssytem onto High Performance (It was on Balanced previously).  That hasn't helped much although I did get a large file to get almost to 2GB before it stopped.

It may be a bit of a bug with Windows I think.

The drive is having the same issue in all the USB ports back and front.  I've tried it on an Acer Timeline Netbook without issue up to 4GB file (although it was dang slow).

So I'm stuffed if I know what's going on here....
Formatted for NTFS so it would work with large files.

It's very important that you successfully test the 2 questionable USB-2 storage devices on another computer. You have to know you are trying to fix the right machine or device.

Yes, USB-2 is slow. Including eSata and 1000 speed ethernet, it's the slowest I use any more.

Let's say they both work fine on another machine with a single 6gb file, but not your Area-51. I highly doubt it's a Windows-7 64-bit problem (Microsoft problem). I tell you what ... if you don't figure it out soon, let me know and I will do a test for you.

Try scanning the files first before copying, and then turn off your Anti-Virus' Real-Time Protection ... then start the copy.

Also, are you using any utilities that have modified or added themselves to the Windows File Explorer shell ? It would appear as a new option when you right click on a file. BTW, what exactly are these files? Are they named simply and in English?

I would continue to do your testing only with the back ports until you get it working (that one less variable involved ... the MIO-Board).

Ok well it's definitely not the drive and I doubt very much it's the ports either.  I have it working to some extent at the moment.  If I copy the files to the desktop first and then cut/paste them to the My Passport I am having no issues.  It's working a charm that way (although it's not an ideal solution).  There seems to be some issue copying from one external HD to the other (a My Book Essential 2TB to a My Passport Essential 500GB).

As to what is the actual cause I am unsure.  You are right, it may be my anti virus (I have read some threads of this causing issues) and there are a number of other possibilities.  However, the drives work fine (tested on my Acer Timeline) and are actually working with this temporary solution.

The actual files are mkv's of some of my Blu Ray movies as my son is only 3... So it's safer to run them through a WD TV and DVD-less rather than arguing with him about who gets to put the DVD in the player (I already have 3 stuffed DVD's through scratching now).  Most are 4GB but some go up to 7GB.
