Aurora R1 Not Recognizing 6 TB Internal Drive

I am unable to get my Aurora R1 to recognize the full capacity of a 6 TB internal hard drive.  From reading on the forums, it seems as though this may be possible by making it a "data drive" formatted as GPT.  I have formatted as GPT by am still only seeing under 2 TB available.  How can I make my drive a "data drive" such that I can utilize the full 6 TB?  I am using Windows 7 64 bit, i7 930 & Bios A11.

For some reason I thought you already had the latest version of Intel-RST.

Yes, by all means ... update to the latest version ... run the latest version or run without it completely.

If you go to the "About Version" screen, and it's called something like "Intel Rapid Storage Technology" then this is what you want:

File name:SetupRST.exe
Version: 13.2.4.1000 (Latest)

https://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?DwnldID=24293&lang=eng&ProdId=2101

However, if it's called RSTe or you see the word Enterprise, you need a different version (for easy upgrade).

Just a reminder ... backup your C: drive before messing with Intel-RST. Things can go bad pretty quick. On desktops, I use SSD instead of RAIDs and try NOT to use Intel-RST at all.

Since it's already on there, and you can't really uninstall it, so update it and see what happens. It would be interesting if it finally has a purpose on non-Raided systems. Try this before trying the DiscWizard (and possible Acronis driver insertion).

I've always had this opinion of Intel-RST. However, I just found this on a knowledgeable IT pro's (in HDD/NAS/RAID field) forum post:

Advantages of the IRST Software installation:
1. AHCI and RAID: monitoring of some details regarding the drives, which are connected to the Intel SATA AHCI resp.RAID Controller

2. only RAID: creation, repairing and modification of a RAID array from within the OS

3. only RAID: enabling of the "Write-Back-Caching" feature (boost of the write performance in RAID mode)

Disadvantages of the IRST Software installation:

1. extension of the boot time

2. additional demand of resources (the IRST Service usually runs permanently in the background)

3. possible increase of system instability (some IRST Software versions have severe bugs)

It’s only recognizing 2TB because of hardware limitation the chipset of the Aurora R1 is old therefore it will not able to recognize 6TB.

Are you sure drive is good? Ever seen it work? [:)]

Does it appear in BIOS? Does it appear in BIOS as 6tb?

Links to those old threads might help. Did anyone ever get 3tb to work? (ie get beyond 2tb barrier) ?

AFAIK, formatting as GPT and using as non-bootable drive (ie data drive) was only prerequisite.

Personally, I don't accept "Aurora R1 (with X-58 chipset) is old" as an answer. [:S]

The drive is in good working order.  It does appear in BIOS but only as 1.6 TB.  Within Intel RST it shows correctly as 5.723 GB however.

Outside of Windows (using RAID hot key) or inside Windows using GUI app?

Inside Windows using GUI app

Just to verify, you have BIOS HDD port set to AHCI and not RAID, right?

Really? Ok, so then ... I'm not sure I understand the problem.

In Control Panel , Admin Tools ... Disk Mgnt

If you select the 6tb drive, and it has absolutely NO partitions on it ... what does the un-partitioned space show as?

After Partition Image Backup of your C: Drive (for safe keeping) you could try:

1. Clean install Windows without Intel-RST (to get rid of it ... and it's replacement HDD-SATA driver).

2. If WD or Seagate HDD ... try free Acronis Capacity Manager

Thanks so much for your help Tesla1856.  I have found something else which may involved:

My drivers are 9.6.0.1014.  However when navigating to driver download page on Intel, the Setup RST.exe says "This platform is not supported."  How can I update my RST drivers and which ones should I be using?

I tried 13.2.4.1000 but received the platform is not supported error message.  So then I tried version 10.1.0.1008 and it installed without issue.  And guess what - it worked!

I now have access to the full 5.45 TB.  Thanks so much for all your help and time.  Cheers!

So then I tried version 10.1.0.1008 and it installed without issue.

It turns-out there was a major driver architecture change at Intel-RST v11.5.0.1149 and later. It's working, so don't mess with it, but that might explain the error.
