Aurora R1 - Samsung SSD not recognised by BIOS or Windows
Hi all - I've spent the last few hours trying to install a 500GB Samsung 840 EVO SSD in my Aurora R1 with no success - this is my first time installing any kind of disk drive so I'm really hoping someone can help.
Alienware Aurora 00
2.80 gigahertz Intel Core i7 930 (quad core)
Board: Alienware 04VWF2 A02
BIOS: Alienware A11 04/06/2010
Windows 8 Professional (x64)
The SSD is not recognised by the BIOS or Windows (I've looked in both Disk Management and Device Management). I have the latest BIOS (A11) and ACHI is activated. I've tried it in both SATA port 1 and port 2.
When I attempt a clean install of Windows the SSD does seem to be sort of recognized but the installation process requests drivers which don't seem to exist.
I have read that there is a compatibility issue with Samsung & Dell, so thinking I may have to try a different brand... or is it just that my system isn't SSD compatible at all?
I did try to install the drivers on this page: http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/04/DriverDetails/Product/alienware-aurora?driverId=R306059&osCode=W764&fileId=2731119145&languageCode=en&categoryId=SA? I've created a bootable USB drive but when I try to run the .exe Windows 8 says it isn't compatible - I have to say the installation instructions are not very clear so I may be doing something fundamentally wrong!
Any help gratefully received.

My Samsung 830 works fine. Installed three 830's in Dells recently. Just put a 840 Pro in old Dell XPS-410.
First, get it to show in BIOS. Be sure SATA channel is turned on.
Test drive in other machine, usb enclosure, etc. to make sure drive is good.

Good it DID NOT run or install. It's for a different Samsung drive.
As for your Samsung 840 Evo on above mentioned config ... 99.99% sure no additional drivers are required.

Thanks guys, think I'm going to give up and return it, as I've tried everything (and wasted most of my weekend in the process!). It could be that the drive is simply broken.

It is hard to say what is happening during your clean install. I believe it isn't the SSD however.
I installed a Samsung 840 on my Aurora 1 a few weeks ago with no problem and do not recall reading anywhere about a Dell incompatibility issue.
Just a thought though. Perhaps since you are installing a single licensed Windows on a new drive Windows is denying the install since it might believe you are abusing the license agreement.
I would first make a clone backup of your original drive using Acronis software and then try clean installing the original drive and go from there. Once the original drive is set up clone the SSD using the Acronis software.
