Hopefully, nobody experiencing this problem waited for a fix long enough for the brief window of opportunity to return the product for a refund to close. They've had more than ample time to fix the problem. If they released a BIOS update that didn't fix it, then it seems likely they are not going to and don't want customers to have the ability to overclock their desktop. Interference of any sort in this regard is inappropriate and overstepping boundaries. What end users choose to do with their personal property is none of their business.

I would not take any notice of how Dell describe/track fixes; ie, try it anyway.

The 17R3 (and 15R2) had problems over the past couple of months, where the system would freeze and require opening up to reset (or a mainboard replacement!) and Dell removed several previous iterations of the BIOS for those models, and eventually issued an updated version.

Never mentioned or really engaged with customers as to what was happening, and still doesn't show any trace of any previous fixes that made it into the most recent.

Dell's transparency around updates is appalling; hopefully they have better internal systems in place, or we are all going to be in trouble.

Couple things to try...

First, disable all the OC features and run Prime95(Custom, 1344/1344, blend)  while keeping an eye on CPU temps using CoreTemp. If system is 100% stable..(meaning Prime95  ran for 60 minutes without fault). Once you validate system is stabled at non-OC speeds then move on.

2- Enable OC LVL1 which gives you a 4.2 OC. Jump back into windows, start CoreTemp, launch Prime95 and do the steps above again. You will see higher temps is CoreTemp, but hopefully in the 60-70 range. If Prime95 runs 60 minutes without error then reboot to BIOS and go to step3.

3- Enable OC LV2 which gives a 4.4 OC and adds some voltage offset. Jump into windows, Start CoreTemp, start Prime95 and begin the stress test again.

I assume somewhere along the steps above you will trigger the error you are reporting. Keep an eye on temps when the error was triggered.

hope this helps!

I also went into bios and saw an OC LVL 2. I have been running that for a few days and it OC me to 4.4Ghz! Any insight on that?
Sales literature continues to state a 4.2 on all 4 cores, therefore you probably have a 4.4 OC but on one core only, since Aware is famous infamous for the whimpy single core 'factory' overclock. Run CPU-Z, see what ya got there as Core Speed / multipliers on each core to be sure the 4.4 is on all 4 & not just 1 core only; perhaps your ratios are 44 42 42 42 / 44 39 39 39 or similar, check your manual settings

- tonight we saw KingJohn with a validated OC of just over 5Ghz -

BloodHawk has a 5.2 on his laptop, he's cheering KingJohn on to catch up to him as we speak. So, get your overclock on man, what's your validated OC on this liqwid-kooled desktop

If they would just stop it with the stupid overclock interference and release a genuine enthusiast grade product with a legitimate BIOS all of this rigmarole would be unnecessary. It is ludicrous the way they gimp everything they touch. It's inexcusable on Alienware laptops and for Alienware desktops it rises to the level of being unforgivable. People should stop buying crippled trash if that is all they are selling.

The updated BIOS fixed my issue.

Was wondering if I could ask my question here instead of making a new post. I also received the OC error after installing an additional 2x 8GB ram sticks, however, after entering bios and selecting the 4.2Ghz factory OC when my computer starts it still shows me 4.0Ghz. Should I be enabling XMP? I don't really intend to OC past the stock OC so at the minimum I would like to get it back to where it was.
