Upon further inspection, the problem may lie with the Power Supply fan and the Top fan -- they seem to be the main culprits, revving up like crazy, super loud for no reason at all.
I do have the 460 watt power supply, which I see other people have reported having the same problem.
I'm having the exact same issue with a brand-new Alienware Aurora desktop. I just took it out of the box and hooked it up, and that loud fan noise won't stop!
I agree that it appears to be coming from the fan at the top of the unit, the one that you can see through the vents on top.
I tried playing with the fan controls in the Alienware Command Center's Thermal Controls section, but even setting the "Top Fan" to 0% has it at 454rpm (and it's marked as being idle), so it's still making too much noise. I wasn't able to find a way to turn it off completely, to confirm that it's the culprit.
This is a desktop that I mean to have in my bedroom, and no way will this cut it if the fan can't be turned down.

One of my co-workers had the same problem with his new x51r3. He called support and in the end they swapped out the mother board.
