Aurora R7 - 2933Mhz HyperX memory option?

Hi,

I recently picked up an Alienware Aurora R7.  It came with the 16GB of DDR4 2666Mhz memory.

I'm thinking of upgrading to 32GB of the Kingston HyperX 2933Mhz memory.  It's an option on the Alienware configurator (as "32GB Dual Channel HyperX DD4 XMP at 2933Mhz") but it's not showing up as an available part on Dell's or Kingston's website.

I also checked with my Dell inside sales rep and they could not find the part number either...

Did anyone order the R7 with this memory type?  If so, could you share the part number from the packing list?

Thanks!

P.S.  It looks like Dell/Alienware motherboards lock the DDR4 memory at 1.2V.  I have some great Corsair memory from other PC's which run at 3000Mhz plus at 1.35V - and the R7 simply does NOT like them.

Which Elite, 2933/3000? 3200? What speed failed? What is improper? Will it not run at 2666 either? Did you return the Crucial & revert back to the stock memory @2666? If returned, are you in the same boat as everyone else, looking for a compatible memory kit? After return, did Crucial give up on R7 or did they recommend another model to try

Has anyone contacted the eBay seller who claims that G.Skill 3000 2 x 8Gb worked? If not, why not

See my other post.  I have not returned the Crucial yet. I am doubtful any non-Dell sold ram is going to work unless they make a BIOS update, as all of the RAM is failing in the same manner.

I have to wonder at this point if Dell/AW has pulled some trick to make us purchase ram upgrades only from them.  Has anyone priced theirs?  When available, it was WELL above the market.  I think there is a wiff of unethical behavior here, and both us users and other ram suppliers should pressure Dell for some answers.  If a technical problem with their OC utility, it needs to get fixed pronto.

I have just a couple of days to return my system....

Just spoke with tech support, where he consulted the Level 2 supervisor.  They have no information about the part availability or the reason for other ram not booting properly.  Apparently they cannot readily consult engineering.  I have to call sales resolution at 7 am CST tomorrow, as he informed me that would be the last day I can state that I want to return the system.  Or sales resolution may be able to pull a RMWRN (16GB 2933 Fury) from their (unmentionable) if they try.

Another thing that irks me is that the 16GB versions are supplied with one 16 module instead of two eights.  Alien support has told me there is no difference in performance between single channel vs. dual.  Why then does every other knowledge source I've read say otherwise?  Dell probably saved $10 by doing this.

I could find nothing about his G.Skill 3000's working in an Aurora R7, though he was also selling R7 parts.  His MB had regular 2666 ram.  Where did you see a connection?

the connection I made is the forum post I composed on November 27th with screenshots of the original listing + his private message to me that said it all works. Didn't you read my post the other day?

original listing, I saw G.Skill & that made me want to ask about it so I did

he said it was a good kit that works so I reported it this info to the forum thread here

The listing has changed, now the G.Skill is sold separate

I encouraged forum members to contact this person, since people may need a bit more hard confirmation than just a story about how old Cass heard 'it works' then go off & spend $150+ for nothing. I do not own the R5-R7 & it would be best for another owner to speak to this person to get some hard proof it works & / or consult on the details better. This isn't my problem, I helped out where I could when I could (=

Sorry, I either didn't see your post or didn't notice the ram.  But I did email him earlier - no answer yet.

Since Adorama has the Ballistix Tactical ram (Crucial said would work) on backorder, at least I can side-step that one, thanx to ryanp.  Book says to use 2x16 for 32GB, so I'll order Ripjaw kit.

I can't vouch for the kit, I've tried to phrase things like it's a good rumor with potential & suggest buying from a place that accepts ez returns if it's a bust. I told the guy to sign up here & lend just 5minutes to vouch for the kit to put the community at ease, highly unusual for someone not to do that but not unheard of. I hope it works, I'd regret posting any of this if it doesn't work, it's out of my hands til someone tries it or gets positive word from the seller I linked to *shrug* Hot tip but could be a bust, proceed accordingly

Yesterday I requested my return label, good for 10 days.  I also ordered 2x16 Ripjaw V 3000 to get here maybe by Mon or Tue, enough time to try them.  I hope they work because I like my R7, but If they don't, I'll be using the label.  And there are no replacement R7 8700K's available for exchange.

I am disappointed with Dell; they did 80% well, but IMO, let their O-C fans down by not purchasing newer MB's or enough O-C CPU's and ram.  The net showed me how to build a similar box for about the same cost, but with parts that are better quality (pwr supply), and more up-to-date, O-C friendly (MB, ram and cooler).  And I found 8700K's.

Received the Ripjaws V 3000 16x2 today, and I'm happy to say they work.  OC control reports they run at 2918 MHz at XMP1, same as the Fury single 16.  If there is a BIOS change for dual channel, l can't find it in the book.  No XMP2 is offered.  When I first powered them, I got a screen about changing ram configuration, but no problem. Now have an idle original 2933 and open to PM's.

I'm running a 5.0 GHz profile which appears stable for short tests.   I don't believe Intel internal paste and/or this single fan cooler are good enough for sustained 5.0  with my chip.  When this profile, which took careful voltage balancing, confirms, cpu hits 92 deg C, so I won't run any torture tests here.  Using "balanced" cooling, Passmark CPU tests appear to be throttling speed to 4.7 some of the time.  But its single-thread rating (60% utilization) is good, just under 3000.  Next is to see how my video editor reacts.

Conclusion: it's a keeper.  Post-warranty, I might do a de-lid and bigger cooler, but a bigger case probably required too.

Nice!  Awesome find hrgreen‌!

I tried a Corsair Vengeance LPX 3000 kit (2x8) and would only come up @ 2133Mhz.  Would you mind sharing the Ripjaws V part number you ordered?  (it would be something like "F4-3000C15D-32GVR")

Thx!

It sounds like you did not enable xmp and reboot.

Since you got the ram and enabled XMP have you powered off the machine and cold booted into Windows? I am 3/3 from enabling xmp and rebooting and 0/3 after a cold boot where it either gives memory errors during post or crashes on windows boot.

If you set speed above 4.6 GHz, you probably will need to adjust CPU voltage upward SLIGHTLY to stop BSOD's.   I did this very gradually, and stopped when I got to about 2/3 in the voltage bracket (never go above it!), and saw that toward the end of the Confirmation process, my CPU fan was coming full on and CPU temp was reaching above 90 deg C.  Important not to set voltage too high or chip may fry.  I won't run torture tests/repeated benchmarks if I see temps above 85 deg, and I monitor temp in the OC page because the response is much quicker than in the Cooling page.

As I said, I think de-lidding and a bigger cooler is needed before pushing my machine past a somewhat vulnerable 5 GHz, but  my system will run the PassMark suite without crashing, and CpuMark single-thread is 2950 +/- 50; MemoryMark is around 3000.

Let me know how you do.
