BSOD after BIOS update
Hey guys. I've already sent Chris a message about this problem but I wanted to see if anyone else has any ideas. As the subject states I updated my Bios from the dell website last night from A03 to A10. Everything updated successfully but right after the machine rebooted I got a blue screen stating there was a fatal hardware error and the machine rebooted again and continued to do so. It would get to the windows log in screen sometimes and other times it would reboot before I could type in my login info. I can get the pc to work in safe mode. I went to the event viewer and saw that there was a fatal hardware error reported by the processor core. PC has worked flawlessly until the bios upgrade. I just wanted to get your thoughts before I got on the phone to tech support. Is there anything I can do or anything in particular I should tell tech support? I'm still under warranty.
Thanks.

Hey guys, well the tech no showed his appointment so I guess I have to call and see what the hell is going on. I rest the COSM and managed to get Acronis to restore my C drive. But now the time is all wrong. Do I have to do anything in the BIOS to correct the time? Or anything else for that matter after a COSM reset? Thanks

If you pulled the battery to reset the BIOS, be sure to check:
1. Battery was re-installed properly. The clock runs from the battery. You might also check it for proper voltage (out of circuit).
2. After reinstalling the battery, I always use the proper "Reset and Load BIOS Defaults" inside the BIOS screen to make sure everything gets re-initialized properly. Then make your changes.
You set the time from the BIOS screen. I have seen Windows become very unstable and un-usable when the time is incorrectly set or Windows sees garbage or invalid time data. Also, the year must be valid and fairly close to now.

Yes you have to reset the time. Is everything working as it should beside the time being wrong?

Alright, so after the tech not showing up I was so mad (and bored), that I reset the CMOS again with the Video cards and the sound card pulled out. Plugged everything back up and used Acronis to restore the main drive. I was surprised when everything booted fine but I was still weary. I left the PC on for over three hours and it didn't crash. I'm still not entirely confident that its fixed but for now at least I'm typing this post out on a PC, that yesterday, would barely load windows. I'm gonna give it a day or two then I'm gonna call Dell and tell them how angry I am with the company they contracted out my repairs to. They still haven't called about the missed appointment. Thanks again guys for all your help. You all have been ten times more help that Tech Support ever could. I'm sure my saga isn't over yet, but at least for now, I have a working PC.

I never did believe it was a hardware issue. Glad it's working again.
Please give them hell for not showing up. That has happened to me before and it made me burning mad. Find out who they contracted and contact them too.

I flashed bios A01 to A11. All seem to be until reboot. Upon reboot splash screen appeared with bios A11 progress bar advancing. Progress bar gets 3/4 done then shows windows files being loaded, reboots again to bios loading progress bar at which point i go into bios. All looks normal, save and exit. Now windows repair or load normally screen appears, so i repair windows. cant repair windows but offers option to system restore, i decline and close, reboots to bios progress bar, 3/4 done, then windows loads up to log in screen, log in and all works fine until i restart, then same process over again. So after reading this entire post what is the final consensus about this type of issue...

It verry well can be one little setting in your BIOS that got changed.... For Example: If you have a PCI sound card you update the BIOS it may change the settings also when flashing to a updated BIOS always remember to unplug any extra devices and before downloading the BIOS Update turn off your anti virus software.
See if somthing is enabeled or not disabeled in your BIOS that should be. If you don't see any setting that you feel is not right ...try reseting your CMOS batery. Certin systems have different hardware meaning certin thing have to be disabeled or enabeled acording in your BIOS. Sometimes it will even give a error code pretty sure thats why its giveing you the option to repair or start normal after a BIOS update.Never select repair always select normal start..I alway go through my BIOS settings and take notes just for this reason as updateing the BIOS can and does change settings sometimes.
Did you have and performance issues before updateing the BIOS?
Have you recent used any third party software/Programs for example a PC booster or a registry cleaner that could have change or deleated OS files?
Try above mentioned check BIOS settings if you dont find anything thing in the bios I would reset the CMOS. Post back if that does not do it.

I reset the CMOS several times to no avail, but, I didn't have everything unplugged (Video Cards, Sound Card, RAM). The one time I unplugged everything, and then reset the CMOS, then re-seated everything, it worked. I feel your pain man.

Well ill be hornswaggled, she booted right up and on my desktop in 1min 20....SWEET! So the bios flash must have OC'd my 920 and nothing else was set to facilitate a proper OC, so it crashed and was rebooting itself.

I went into bios again and noticed the cpu was OC"d to 160 x 20 3.2Ghz, instead of 133 x 20 2.6Ghz factory setting. Will reboot and see if all functions well.
