depends on how its used/running environment etc...
I got a M18X R2 the one before the alienware18 and I never shut it off literally, it averaged about 12 hours of hard use 75% or above and idle about 25% of the time, normal not over dusty environment.. I clean mine every 3-4 weeks quickly with caned air. , and every few months remove bottom panel to check up inside for any accumulation.
When blowing I found it best to to make sure you don't spin the fans to fast and to reverse blow from original direction so form the back so dust goes back same way it came in... but that's just my thoughts . if worried you can use a fine pin like me and hold fan blade from spinning when blowing out..
REMEBER THO SHUT DOWN MACHINE AND REMOVE BATTERY.. I do this to make sure it don't turn back on accidently
So I just spray it with air even if the dust goes inside the computer? Sorry for the noobish question im just afraid to clean it i might end up breaking the computer. Thanks!!
air comes in fan out back... so blow from back into fan so dust comes back out same way it came in.. seems to do better job... I don't know if bottom panel is removable on the 18 but the M18X it is so I remove it.. again make sure machine is turned off(not sleep/hibernate etc..)
