Could BIOS be causing CPU overheats?
Alienware 15 R2
i7 7600HQ
BIOS 1.3.10 (latest)
With BIOS default settings my CPU runs at a constant 3.09 at idle. With the CPU enhancement enabled the CPU runs at 3.09. There doesn't seem to be any control in BIOS to run the CPU at the default Max 2.60 or less.
I have used the SupportAssist and Intels CPU Processor ID software to monitor the CPU freq.
Even though my CPU is not a "K" processor it seems to run well over the Max 2.60 at idle constantly.
Perhaps there is an issue with the Turboboost?

Hi AAA737flyer,
Some process may be running in the background so try a clean boot, here is an article that will show you how to do it (in case you need it).

Write down your current BIOS options and then default them. Maybe that would help.
Stuff like Intel SpeedStep and TurboBoost should all be ON and on their defaults. If not using Virtualization or VT, disable it.
In Windows, try Power Profile Balanced (and be sure it's un-modified or recently defaulted).
Do you happen to have an external monitor attached?

The BIOS has always been set at defaults but I selected F9 then F10 just incase some prior BIOS update may have made a modification. I did disable both the Virtualization and the VT for Direct I/O and ran several tests with them disabled and enabled. The Power mode was set to Balanced with no modifications and there has never been any additional monitors attached. No other peripherals other than a mouse.
No matter the configuration, load, or even with the CPU Enhance on in BIOS, the CPU freq registered 3.09.
Interesting how the CPU seems to be frozen at 3.09, even when the Intel Processor Utility was run and the CPU load went to 100 percent the freq still registered 3.09.

Instead of messing around with services and such I overlaid the SupportAssist and intel process id utility over the Task Manager with the Processes Tab displayed. The CPU registered anywhere from zero momentarily to four percent.
After a period of time at idle I would run both utilities and the results were identical, 3.09 every time.
The SupportAssist ran the CPU up to 37 percent while the Intl Utility maxed the CPU to 100 percent. However each time the CPU freq registered 3.09. No turboboost and no idle back to 2.60.
Seems there is absolutely no CPU control and stuck at 3.09. I don't have the K chip but I suspect perhaps there may be some BIOS CPU control issues causing the overheat that folks are reporting.
