My January 2101 Alienware Area-51 (pre-dell manufacture, I think have had no problems with it) now has Directx10 installed. Do I need DirectX11 and where do I get it for my Alienware. Thanks -Jay

You must be running Vista. You can get it from Windows Update or Microsoft.com.
However, it should also be automatically installed the first time you install a game that requires DirectX-11. If you don't have a game yet, you don't need Dx-11 yet.
Actually I am running W7 64 bit Ultimate, I don't have a game yet that needs it, but the new 3DMark 11 Advanced doesn't seem to run without Directx11 and I would like to install DirectX11 just to be up to date. When I do my weekly Windows update, it doesn't seem to offer DirectX11. Where should I get it?
(5) external USB2 -1.5TB Seagate Barracuda 7200 drives Dual DVD Drives: 6x Blu-Ray Burner(BD/DVD/CD) + 16x DVD-ROM Creative X-FI Titanium sound card-(removed for 3rd video card) Creative Turtle Beach gaming headset Logitech Z 5500 5.1 speaker setup Power supply-1000 watt+450W Auxillary Power Supply - Visiontek 450W in front bay powering one of three GTX 285's Nvidia Stereoscopic 3D 1-Dell HD SP2309W monitor 1-Dell HD E248WFP monitor 1-Samsung Syncmaster 2233RZ 120hz 3D ready 22' LCD monitor 1680X1050
... but if your Windows 7 install is corrupted, you might have to clean install. I don't see anything in Programs and Features/Turn Windows Features On-Off ... but maybe you are missing something basic there.
Again, before you go crazy trying to fix it, run dxdiag.exe .
As for 3DMark11 ... be sure you have installed all the patches. I also had to de-activate my second monitor to get it to run (but I think that's an ATI glitch).
Tesla1856, thanks. You are right, dxdaig says that I'm running Directx11. When I run 3dmark11, I get the error box "Directx 11 hardware required", "no DX11 support". I'm not sure whether you know this, but is the GTX 285 DX11 ready? I have three running tri-SLI. I just downloded and installed the most recent drivers from nvidia. If it's not the video card where else could I look? I only have one monitor connected.
That's because you are running a GTX 285 card and that card is not DX 11 but DX 10. Your OS is DX 11 but any game you play will run in DX 10.
3D Mark 11 is a DX 11 benchmark and requires a DX 11 video card. You need to run 3D Mark Vantage which is DX 10.
DirectX is backwards compatable. If you install a DirectX 9 game your DirectX 10 card will play it. If you install a DirectX 11 game it will also play it but it will run it in DIrectX 10.

I can't really think of anything else that Morblore didn't already say.
They are only DX-10, but it shouldn't stop a game from playing.

You did the right thing (by allowing it) but it does not replace your DX11.
Sometimes those older installers place a few files, rewrite some config, or do nothing ... but you must allow it it you want the game to run.
You can run DxDiag.exe to check your current Direct-X install.

Thanks Tesla. DXdiag confirmed I'm running DX 11.
The game runs well too! :)

Strange ... Windows 7 shipped with Direct-X 11 so you should have it. What version does dxdiag.exe say you are running?
On a Vista machine, it's usually offered under "Optional" in Windows Update. It doesn't offer it if you already have it.
You can try here:
