Dual Monitors, Help!

I have the Alienware Aurora R4. I plan to run dual monitors on it but the ports I have are different, they are both DVI but one can run an adapted VGA input but one can't. If a monitor says it can run DVI but has a VGA cable will adapting that work? If not please can someone link me to a monitor that is around £150, HD and will work with both ports. Thank you!

Hello

You can use an adapter to switch a DVI to VGA. Just keep in mind that VGA is analog while DVI is digital. It won't look as good or support the higher resolutions that DVI can.

This won't work because on the ports doesn't do VGA-DVI adaptation and i'd like two of the same monitors. (:

Why can't it? Never seen that.

And you write it output to input ...
Computer to monitor
Call it DVI-to-VGA adapter

That adapter is only about $3 US ... so a DVI computer video port can basically drive either a DVI or a VGA monitor. Never see that not be the case.

If you need further assistance you should probably let us exactly what card you have and even upload a picture of the ports on the back if you want.

I thought that both of your monitors had to be digital? Because I have a 2 VGA-DVI adapters and only they only fit one port... Both ports are DVI

1. No

2. Then one adapter is different or one DVI port is different.

I told you what needs to happen here. You need to take some pictures. And you still haven't told us what video card you have.

I have a DVI-D port and DVI-I port. I would need to buy a £50 active adapter to change a VGA signal to a DVI-D signal...

I promise you that this is not the case. But lets make this simpler. What video card do you have? What monitors are you wanting to run? Please list exact specs.

I have the NVidia GTX 660 and the monitors that I would like to run is the LG E2422PY

The ports are different variants of DVI, I checked and the pins are different. Also Alienware support told me that is what I have.

The GTX 660 comes with a dual link DVI-I and a dual link DVI-D connector. The LG E2422PY comes with a DVI-D connector. Just go buy two DVI-D cables and hook it up. Single or Dual link, doesn't matter.

You could even go with one DVI-D cable and one Display Port cable if you wanted.

Yes you can run two or even 4 of those monitors. Though for 4 you would need to use a HDMI to DVI adapter for one of them. That one would be your info monitor while the two DVI and one Display Port would be your main monitors for gaming.

I added links to the cables in my post. I linked a 3ft and a 6ft.

You can use this tool at Nvidia to help you setup multiple monitors in 2D or 3D surround

You really don't want to use a VGA adapter and even if you did you couldn't use it. Your monitor and GPU doesn't have a VGA connection. If you don't have two DVI-D cables then buy two. They are cheap and can be purchased almost anywhere.
