So is there no software to unlock this ability or is it a hardware lock?
Also, are there different models of the Amplifier, because on the Alienware site it says a GTX 1080 is compatible, but some people are saying the card works but you cannot fit the case back on the Amplifier?
Technically you can use 2 gfx cards. There is the intel chipset card and the whats built into your machine. Using the dock, it uses the intel card and whats in the dock.
There are not different models of AGA. There are different cards. Many 1080's look too large but some of the 1080's will fit. It's all dependent on the size of the card relative to the bracket. If the card sticks out beyond the bracket it may not fit, but if it does not stick out much further than a 1/4 inch or so it should fit. My current card, a factory overclocked 980 TI is flush with the bracket and fits.
Some people modify their AGA's to fit larger cards, as you can imagine this requires removal of material comprising the cover for the AGA. Technically the cards will still work fine. As long as the power requirements are met, the card will work, and as far as I know there is no card that will exceed the capacity of the PSU in the AGA.
Look at the picture I uploaded, the card exceeds the height of the bracket on the left, it probably wont fit.
The main reason for this size discrepancy is the cooling system or just some kind of design aesthetic.
