HDMI Audio In Problem Alienware M18x Laptop

Hi. This my laptop Model is: Alienware M18x Laptop

I plugged in my Xbox 360 into my Alienware laptop using the HDMI in. The video is PERFECT and I have no problem switching over to the video for my regular laptop and the HDMI video input.

The only problem I have is with the audio. I CANNOT hear any of the noise from my Xbox 360/Wii or whatever I plug in. I can only hear my LAPTOP itself, but I cannot hear my Xbox 360. How can I fix this problem? I have seen videos on youtube fixing this error with the Sound Blaster 3DI and changing the recording audio and some other things, but my laptop doesn't have Sound Blaster 3DI and when I went to download it from the dell website I couldn't find anything.

Tl;dr: I plugged my xbox 360 into my laptop with HDMI and I can't receive the audio. Please help

My computer according to the service tag is: Alienware M18x. Not the R1 or R2 whatever that means.

I tried posting on the laptop forum and received this response from Jimco

Hello. I have collected all of our tips in the HDMI Audio FAQ, but only the Alienware models have HDMI input and I just do not have any information about that line. All I can tell you is that your model has IDT audio hardware and so has an IDT audio driver. Some other Alienware models like the M18x R2 have the Creative hardware and driver.

HDMI audio is primarily a function of the graphics driver, so at least make sure to have the newest Intel & nVidia drivers.

Try posting on the Alienware Owners Club section of this forum where someone ought to at least be more familiar with the issue. Tell them that you already posted here but we couldn't help.

yes so when u reboot it will go to onboard.. then if you do it again it will reboot to your NVidia cards.. unfortunately this is only way to switch from one to the other..

when u reboot go  device manager and it will tell you  what card you are   on..

when  you reboot to  onboard intel you wont see much of a difference in video quality.. if any only difference you will see is   in gaming performance .. . you wont have any :O

Also  if you go  here: http://downloads.dell.com/Pages/Drivers/alienware-m18x.html

Scroll down to audio and download that driver for your sound card

after go back to device manager and look in Audio Inputs and Outputs(will be at top) and see if HDMI IN  is listed

well  the  intel is basically for power saving and   honestly will install automatically when  and  iff u reboot to    it if already hasent, but will list as INTEL something or other LOL ( I    never  have in the 11 months I owned mine so not sure exactly what it says)

well the network drivers is for your wired connection so if you ever use   it  would   be good to  have  it   installed.. otherwise   its not required  ..

no  unfortunately   I  don't have facebook, im just  here to   help out.. we got  original issue fixed  which is perfect, just  click  on the green YES  button saying  it did  answer your  question.

just sorry took so long, but life gets  in the way sometimes, and remember DELL Rockstars are volunteers

have you checked to  verify  the primary sound is set to proper device..

when xbox  is connected go to the speaker icon, right click, sounds HDMI in .. set as default save and exit..

try this and see if it works for you

I can't take a screenshot for some reason, but I have my xbox device connected and I can use FN + F8 to switch between my xbox screen and my main computer screen.

Under Sound I have the Playback AND Recording Tab both opened and I have checked "Show Disabled Devices" and "Show Disconnected Devices" and the HDMI does not even appear as an option. This solution didn't work.

I'm sorry, but I have to ask ...

When a nice 32" LCD HDTV is around $200 (and 40" HDTV is cheap now too), why do you connect xBox360 to 18" laptop LCD?

Convenience. Being able to use my laptop which I carry around with me 24/7 and being able to use it as a portable television is very convenient. It's not as easy to carry a TV around in my bag. If I were able to get this to work on my laptop, I could pretty much play any system I want on my laptop at anytime and place in the world.

I already said that I checked under both the Recording and Playback Tab lol...

Edit: I also said that I checked "Show Disconnected Devices" and "Show disabled Devices" I can't even see my HDMI as an option. I'm pretty sure I have the latest graphics driver update. I heard I need Sound Blaster 3DI but there's no download for my specific model

3Di is irrelevant to the input .. only output . the sound is controlled from the video card. Can I get the video card and driver info. since I run amd cards it shows in the sound properties, and im still running dell's driver at the moment . another issue is it running on battery when trying or on power? is it got discrete enabled or is it running on the onboard intel .. M18X R1/R2 use FN+F7 .. to toggle between onboard/discrete..

nVidia GeForce GTX 560M

Driver Version: 8.17.12.6903

I have my laptop plugged in WITH the battery. I don't know the answer to your last question. I press FN+F7 and nothing at all changes with my computer for the graphics. Also I believe my computer is just the M18X. When I check under my service tag it doesn't say R1 or R2 for some reason. Thank you for taking the time to help me. I really hope to get this issue solved soon

okay I    learnt something new today apparently  the R1 with NVidia is a bit different  then my R2..

you have an R1 ... ..  so yes apparently with your sound drivers do effect  input

Open Sound Blaster Recon3Di software.
Go to "Mixer" page Inside the frame named Rec:.
Click on the last icon of the line "Input HDMI" and enable "listen to this device".

I guess they are all a little different haha. I have an R1 for sure? How can you be sure of this? =)

As previously stated on my first post, I don't have Sound blaster Recon3DI as a software available on my computer for some reason. =/ I tried updating my drivers to see if this would appear, but it hasn't appeared for some reason =/

Here you go. Oh so mine is R1 because it has a 560 for the graphics card. Okay =)

Can  you  verify the model of your sound card by going to device manager / Sound, video and game controllers. It will show you the model of the sound card your system is holding.

also  the M18X R2 came  with 660/675/680M's so a different generation  along with 3rd gen I7 .. were yours would  be second gen.. Example:  2920XM vs R2 being 3920XM

Oh damn. I always thought my computer was running games really well too. Are you telling me it should be running things EVEN BETTER? So I need to install EVERYTHING? I reinstalled it about a year ago myself and it was really difficult =/ I only did like the basic things. So should I use the article that Tesla posted and start installing everything? How do I know what order to install things?

^^^^^^^^^^^ Do I just follow this thing EXACTLY as it is written?

Edit: YOU GUYS ARE SO AWESOME! I know nothing about computers... I just wanted a cool one for gaming haha =)

I believe a while back ago I did what this article said. (The article below)
