Help with a mostly brand new machine in an R4's case

Exactly what the title says. It's been a bit over three years since Ilast looked into upgrading anything but peripherals and even then I was uncertan about assembling it from the ground up, hence why Ijust selsected what I wanted and had the guys at Ailienware put it together. Things have not improved in these past years, I've become complacent. The only thing I've upgraded inside the case has been the liquid cooling pump. However it has now finally given up, something to do with the RAM or the Graphics card. I could probably repair it but it's past time to upgrade everything.

Things I'm reusing:The case (obviously), disk drive, Hard drive, the new cooling pump and the board that works all the magic with the case

Things to get: Motherboard, CPU, Graphics card, a metric ****ton of RAM, new HDD (Ithought 2 TB's would be enough for gaming... NOPE!) but I'm going to reuse the old one too, Windows 7 and a milkshake.

Minimum specs: Be able to play Star Citizen at max with an Occuls rift smoothly... That's pretty much it. Seemed to be the only game I ever had any consistent issues with despite hardware that was 3+ years old and there doesn't seem to be anything quite as intensive that's caught my eye of late. I'd also like to do some games/graphics design too so I've looked into some drawing tablets but what matters most now is the rig itself. I'm getting withrdrawel symptoms and it's hardly been two days.

Budget: A ways over £3k GBP. Between $4.5k and $5k USD but I don't expect to be using anywhere near that much.

Help needed:Mostly with making sure that everything will fit inside the case and all the wires. So many wires! I know how to put the old stuff back in if Ineeded too but that's just working from memory. When it comes to assembling a new one, I'm rather lost.

Any help is greatly appreciated. I'm allready dreaming of even simple games and I'm considering dusting off the old PS2

Hi,

Perhaps this video may be useful. You can also try posting on the Notebook Review and Alienware Arena forums for assistance.

I've had no problems with taking it apart, it's making sure all the new stuff works with one another and fits in the case.  Besides it's the alx one I belive I have but thanks.

I haven't done an Aurora mthrbrd swap, but I can pass on a link to someone who did; if you post in that thread, maybe MrTaylor can answer questions related to his swap.

Note that CmndCntr version 2.08.09 is the last version which can install on a non-Aurora mthrbrd; 2.08.11 3.5/3.6 can't, so you'd have to boot into your existing drive if those versions are installed on it. If they aren't installed on it yet, now is the time to do it, before your old mthrbrd is removed ... this is about the most info I can pass on, as I do not have the free time anymore to get involved with people's swaps, so good luck with yours. You can use this forum's search box to hunt for further info related to Aurora, bing/google Alienarena & Alienowners forums exist also for help/archived info

Ok, new problem. Got the parts at last but now I have a problem with the os. Tried a factory reset (backed up the data I wanted to keep first ) but it only gets as far as the windows loading screen,  and not far at that. Apparantly it's a problem with using a new motherboard. I've tried finding a windows 7 ultimate 64 bit iso but all the links I've tried are either broken or shady beyond belief. I have the key on the back of the case. Just need a link to the iso or whatever. And no, the disk they sent with the Aurora seems to be blank. I have learned a lot from this, top of the list is make a bloody recovery disk.

Contact Dell, ask if they have reinstall dvd's, here are normal part#'s, there may be others, they can look up what u need by your service tag, approx. $10:

  • 7HP: DRGYF >< 7HP SP1: T8R68 >< 7Pro SP1:0KK7H  >< 7Ult SP1: W2X98

perfect example of Alienware Multi-Language OEM Reinstall DVD:

If dvd's are sold out, 7 may be available on a usb, about $40.

  • 'Alienware' dvd's install activated on original mthrbrd, use product key COA if mthrbrd changed

Here a basic Dell DVD 7HP SP1: 571CC
