Hi,

We do not recommend using Windows 10 with this system, it is not a supported operating system for this Alienware desktop model, therefore, it could cause driver related issues or compatibility issues with software. For this particular issue that you're having, you could try reinstalling the Catalyst Control Center. Uninstall it first from the "Programs and Features" list, then restart the system and install it again.

Hi Rodrigo, thanks for the reply, I should have said I do realise Windows 10 is not officially supported on the R3 but generally it runs with few issues and rarely crashes so this is an oddity!  I will try what you recommend and come back later this week with an update, regards, Peter

Hi Rodrigo, uninstalled all AMD Graphics software, rebooted, reinstalled the last supported AMD Graphics software for Win 10 and my graphics card.  Rebooted and interestingly enough it booted with the "Use Extended Display Identification Data (EDID) or driver defaults” box NOT checked, a hopeful start:-).  I will monitor for a week and then come back to you.  Thanks, Peter

Hi Peter,

Thank you very much for confirming this, that is a good start.

This card (like many others  ) are depreciated in Windows-10 (nice going AMD).

Uninstall all existing AMD software, drivers and Apps.

Let Windows toss you a final working AMD driver and CCC, as written here:

If still problems, there is a nice program called RadeonPro that still does some cool stuff. Maybe it will help.

Hi Rodrigo, well it was a short lived success and re-checking of the "Use Extended Display Identification Data (EDID) or driver defaults” is still happening.  Is this a Windows feature used by AMD or an AMD additional feature if that makes sense?

Hi Tesla1856, thanks for the radeonpro.info link I had not seen that before.  I see the logic letting Microsoft supply the driver I might give this a go, do you think there would be any loss in performance against the latest supported AMD driver that I am running?  I only ask as resetting the resolution is a bit of a pain however it is better than losing some game performance.

Thanks, Peter

I don't have comparison data, but I doubt it. I'm just trying to help you come up with a workable solution.

I added an example URL link about depreciated AMD drivers under Windows-10 to above post.

What monitor or HDTV is this anyway, and why do you think it's a EDID problem?

I really appreciate you are giving me ideas towards a workable solution:-)

The monitor is a ViewSonic VX2835vm LCD, it worked perfectly till we had a lightening storm here, after that the problem appeared so I am assuming something got through the earth to the internals...  Thanks, Peter

Thanks Tesla/Rodrigo for your help, I thought I let you know I installed the Windows 10 creator update (Version 1703) and everything works again as I would expect.  The Use Extended Display Identification Data (EDID) or driver defaults is no longer being re-checked each time!  Kind of interesting...  But fixed!  Peter
