Is my M18x R2 GPU running too hot?

Hi all, I don't know if my GPU temps are too high but they seem to be. At start up with no programs running my GPU temps range between 60 degrees C & 65 degrees C. This seems to be excessive since I have no programs running, no GPU overclock, no CPU overclock & everything standard. Nvidia driver is standard 296.39 which came installed with the laptop. Lappy is only 2 months old and yes there is no dust in the grills or fan areas. I do have problems playing BF3 ( the only game I have) but I don't know if this is relevant given the problems with this game. Even just running mcafee virus scanner (no other programs running) GPU's will reach just above 90 degees celcius. Surely this is not normal. While writing this post no other programs running I am siiting on 61 degrees C. Forgot to add that ambient temperature is very low as it is the middle of winter here. Hope someone can help with some advice.

Hi Mutumba, use these steps to measure the temps on both GPU & CPU. The article holds good practices you can do periodically to avoid overheating. Let me know how it goes.

i found using a cooling matt has helped too , i have notepal U3 which has lowered my temps 10 degrees across the board , you could also upgrade your thermal compounds on the GPU/CPU which also helps !

Hi Juan, thanks for your reply.

Vents are clean and there is no dust accumulated around the fans.

I have updated the bios to A03, but little if any change maybe 1 or 2º C

As I am writing this I hae only Microsoft word & cupid running temp is 58º C with ambient temperature of 16º C (middle of winter here).

While running Unigine temps were running at max 76º C which is good and CPU temps were 80º C.

While running 3D mark 06 GPU temps were running at max 75º C which is good and CPU temps were 91ºC.

What did occur though in the benchmarking videos was massive bands of red to pink, depending on the lighting level strobing up and down the screen and halo effects around light sources and clouds in both Unigine & 3D mark 6.

Inadvertently prior to the tests benchmarking tests above I had SLi disabled and ran the tests and there were no bands of strobing red bars. While I think
the temps are OK except for when nothing is running (58º C to 60º C is too high)  there is something seriously wrong with the GPU’s, SLi or both.

well i would call tech suppost mutumba , its clear the Heatsinks need repasting or re-seating , mine never hit over 65 on full load whilst gaming for 2-3 hours , i have always found AW very helpful give them a shout or repaste with a better compound and you will see the difference .

i would also recommend a Cooler Master notepal U3 as i said its knocked 10 degrees off everything for me

Have you also tried updated the Nvidia drivers ? , as i believe the ones you have installed are quite old now
