From what you describe, yes ... I think I would try a new LCD display-cable first. During this replacement, you will also be checking the connections on both ends.
If that doesn't work, you keep replacing parts, one-at-a-time, until it's working ... or until you deem it not financially feasible. .
Actually, the first thing you try is an external monitor to make sure motherboard and video-card are 100% operational.
The display works just fine on the external monitor. I'll be ordering a new display cable to see if that's the issue. If it helps, sometimes pushing hard on the connector with the cable seated would make it work better; could this indicate a motherboard issue?
Otherwise, after the display cable, what other parts would you recommend trying to switch out?

1. Good
2. Possibly, but could still just be the cable. Remember that the wire strands inside the insulation could be broken, but look ok from the outside. Also, it could be where the wires are crimpled to connector pins.
3. Examine the LCD panel and motherboard (and their connectors) while doing the repair.
Also, the POST codes I occasionally get are 8 beeps, which, as you know, signify LCD launch failure. This happens 1/20 startups. I'll update once I replace the cable.

What will I specifically be looking for during the examination of the LCD and motherboard?

Anything that would prevent the electrical signals and voltages from being properly connected and transferred.
