M14x users
* Download the recent drivers for the nvidia drivers here. Although not certified by Dell, they work on my M14x
* Make sure you have a good cooling pad. I recommend the Coolmasters Coolpal U2 from newegg.com for 30$. It comes with two 80mm fans grate cooling
* Use the Evga Precision to monitor your gpu temps, loads, usage while gaming
* Download GameBooster 3.0. It will close down any unnecessary programs that will only slow down the laptop while gaming. Use this one with caution
* If you do not know how mnay FPS your getting while in your favorite game, download fraps. It's a free program will allow you to record up to 30 seconds of game footage. But if you buy the full version you will be able to record full length game footage
* WARNING, these settings will drain your battery. Be sure to use the AC adapter while on these settings. These settings will help you game better and help your laptop a bit -
Open up your Nvidia Control panel> Manage 3D settings> Global settings> High-performance NVIDIA processor
Click Start> Control Panel> Hardware & Sound> Power Options> Show additional plans> Click High Performance> Click Apply
If your having some other technical issues, please feel free to ask. I might be of some help. I have owned my M14x since Nov.15th of this year and I love it. I had problems with it the first few days I had it but I quickly fixed them on my own and have not had any other problems since then. I also had a guy pm me on my youtube page requesting my help cause his laptop was overheating. I quickly told him what to do and on friday he's going to get his laptop fixed by replacing the "thermal paste" on his GPU/CPU. I have also told him about the above settings to help him play BF3 better. So if all goes will he will be playing BF3 fine this coming weekend.

Great suggestions Artic. I will check them out for my M14X. Like you, I too had minor issues at first with my M14X when I first got it back in May but it's now running very smoothly. I will check out your gaming suggestions. The coolmaster pad is one I have been looking at as well but have yet to purchase it.

I'm sure it won't work and you'll get your system erased to factory defaults. you have to upgrade intel graphics before. they're still there to upgrade after w7 upgraded in december. it's clear this story is becoming hard stuff because m14x isn't there anymore. wait for some rings from dell to nvidia/intel and we'll see... maybe we'll turn fortunate from unfortunate sons.

because dell is stupid in how they change the id's for the hardware so you can only use their terrible drivers

Have you guys tried this website before?
www.laptopvideo2go.com/.../disclaimer
Just follow these steps:
Download the requested driver and the modified inf file.
1. Unpack the driver
2. Replace the nv_disp.inf file with the modified one you downloaded
3. Launch the setup and install the driver.
It worked for me in the past for my M14X. It may help you if you have not tried it.
If not, you can always do a system restore back to what you had before.

Have you looked at the issues with Nvidia Optimus and playing L.A. Noire. I bought my M14x so I could play this gave without it lagging and it won't launch. You seem to be one of the only people on this forum that seems to know whats up.
Thanks!
Michael

One thing you can do, if you have not already, is to right click on the game's shortcut then select the graphics option and then the high graphics from the menu. I forget what it says exactly but it will be obvious. That worked for me at the very first time I tried running some games.

I am in the exact same boat. I have a brand new Alienware m14x with 555m. No matter what I try I can't upgrade the nvidia driver that comes installed. I called Dell for support and they said they didn't offer free support for their drivers, this would have to be paid support. I'm very disappointed. I can't believe the updated drivers from Dell won't install on the flagship alienware laptop and they don't provide any fix or support.

What a tragedy! We're left adrift in the indifference! Fortunately I had some great help and kind support from Terry and I thank you him very much. But he cannot do nothing with the indifference of these managers. It's clear I've handed out my change (1500$) to dell's parties and drinks. True is: the driver won't install untill INTEL GRAPHICS CHIPSET FOR DELL WILL INSTALL. there's great chitchatter here (every support knows that) about NVIDIA/INTELL new family aren't taliking well and the 2drivers arent working together for W7. last december father BILL W7 came on the scene with new updates for intel graphics (and you may check they're really there at intell site), still they don't work for DELL, even if dell put online nvidia updates with no care about us and the problem. second true is: they're putting online something that won't install. why are they talking not giving support? final true is: dell is using upgrades binding you to spend extra money in support, especially by ending the life of your laptop soon, just a second the warranty terms end (the fan BIOS A08 upgrade is a typical example). maybe that a good tweeting will wake google up on dell buyers. let see that.

Hi folks - has there been any traction on this? I've finally got the Steam version of LA Noire running on my m14x but it lags really badly. The disk version wouldn't work at all. And fraps has stopped working too! i72670QM, Geoforce GT555M
