M17x-R3, Intel Core Extreme i7-2920XM
hello guys,
i got a M17x R3 with Radeon HD 6990M and i7-2670QM. now i bought an i7-2920XM, but for a reason it does not work. i tried several bios versions originally from dell. over A07 to A09, now i got A12. i also removed the graphics card, but i don't get a picture. when i start the laptop with the i7-2920XM, it lasts a few seconds longer than normal and then i get just a beeping sound (5s beeping, 5 seconds pause and so on). can anybody tell me a reason for this? i could imagine that the cpu is simply broken. in this case i would change it to a new one. i just wanted to get safe not to lose time with order the new one.

We never tested the i7-2920XM on the M17x-R3. The Dell OEM DYP1X i7-2920XM CPU was only validated in the M18x-R1. The fastest CPU we validated on the M17x-R3 was the Dell OEM 9HCX7 i7-2860QM.

ok, thanks for this information.
i have already seen a couple of M17x R3s with this CPU build in. so this should be manageable, even if the xm is not officially proven for this model.
do i need a modified bios? is anyone out there with this configuration?

now i asked in an unofficial german alienware forum.
there are several guys with this configuration (and others with 2960xm or gtx 580m).
it is with the original bios possible. now i flashed Schnuffel's modded bios A04 (a modded M18x bios file) and i can change EVERY setting without safety barriers.
