M17x R4 Power Issues

I’m going to make this as short as possible.

Laptop shutdown quickly (just cut its power)...wouldn't turn back on...

Research led me to try and take out the NVIDIA graphics card (660m)

Laptop came turned back on perfectly fine.

Laptop wouldn't charge with the 180-watt charger I had.

Originally I think the laptop came with a 240 and when I replaced it I bought the wrong one, but it seemed to do it job and maybe this is where the problem stems from.

I bought a 240-watt charger. Laptop charges fine

However, if I plug the charger in while the computer is up and running the blue light on the charger goes out. If I put the computer to sleep, then open up the laptop. It charges fine and the blue light stays on for the duration.

What could this be?

I’m pretty sure there is a power issue. I want to get a new graphics card but it super expensive and to just plug in and play with a NVIDIA 660-680m is about $350 give or take. Plus what if that new one just burns up.

Right now I’m just riding this computer out until its death. I purchased it I think June 2013

Hi,

Make sure you are running the latest Bios version for your system (A13). Also, try doing a power drain. Follow the steps below to do a power drain.

  • Turn the system off and disconnect the AC adapter.
  • Disconnect the battery.
  • Disconnect all external devices (USB devices, headsets, external monitors, etc.)
  • Press and hold the power button for 30 seconds.
  • Connect everything again and turn on the system.

After doing this, confirm if the same issue persists.

Although it took me forever to actually perform these steps (forever as in  you told me in march and now its May). Your steps worked and i can plug and unplug the charger while the computer is running and the chargers light stays on. I was on BIOS A12
