your limited by your operating system

to answer your question windows 7 professional and windows 7 ultimate 64 bit edition can handle a max ram of 192 gigs while the other versions of windows 7 in 64 bit have a max ram of 16 gigs

your computer will hold 32 gigs of ram only if you have a intel quad core i7 processor,

I know this from experience, I have an alienware m17xr3

came with windows 7 home edition 64 bit

I bought 4 8 gig sticks of ram Corsair Vengeance 1600 mhz

I installed all 4 only to find out that even though my computer read that it had 32 gigs installed only 16 gigs were available, obviously troubled by this I went on to find out why, thats when I learned that your limited by the operating system,

so I upgraded to windows 7 ultimate 64 bit and my computer reads 32 gigs installed 31.95 gigs available

and I have also read that only 1333 mhz ram will work thats not true either

just have to remember to go into the bios and change the mhz of the ram to whatever your new ram is, if you have any questions about the limitations of your computer, do what I did I got in a chat with a dell service tech and asked away thats how I found all this out other than the limitations of the operating system, hope this helps anyone that wants to max out their systems

but in my opinion if your gonna max out the ram you might as well add an ssd

my computer boot up time is 29 seconds.

its possible to but thats for another thread

Doesn't it 8GBs per slot? That sure is a lot of RAM your wanting. What are you using it for?

I know that it is a maximum of 8GB per DIMM with 4 available slots -

But no one can give me a straight answer on What is the total amount of Ram the system can handle 24 GB or 32 GB ?

24gb is usually the limit for triple channel ram, where it would use 8gb per slots, since its got 4 slots and doesn't support triple, my guess is 32gb as long as yours version of windows can support it.
