Monitor going black
Just bought an aurora r4 alx with amd radeon 7950 3gb When I play game, my monitor is probably 5 years old and Ive was using it on my other dell before that without any issue. Its an acer, plugged dvi. Every once in a while while playing the power light of the monitor turns amber and the monitor goes black and then it comes back a few seconds after. The GPU heat is way under overheating and same with my pc. I have updated the driver but didnt uninstall old one first. New catalyst. It still turns black randomly, somethime it doesnt and sometime it does more. Is it a faulty card?? Could my monitor be faulty even tho it was working fine prior to this? Even got new dvi cable thinking it could be it. Let me know if you have any idea what I should do. Computer is brand new. Oh and yea I know I should have a better monitor but whats thr point if the video card is the problem right now

1. Sounds like you figured it out.
2. When a motherboard on a machine is malfunctioning, it will do various things incorrectly. If you find that VGA port works, you can use it on a different/older computer.

Clean install new AMD Catalyst 13.1 WHQL. Then, keep a log.
en.community.dell.com/.../19340381.aspx
Sometimes monitors do that when changing settings or auto-adjusting. When playing a 1080p Blu-Ray my plasma TV sometimes does that (only once and only towards the beginning of the movie). However, I think that's an HDMI or HDCP issue or re-sync.
Yes, using the DVI is correct.
Sure would be nice if you could swap monitors with another system and see where the problem follows.

First of all, Thanks for your answer Tesla1856
How do I clean install AMD Catalyst?
So yesterday I got that weird stripe (rainbow line from top to bottom) all over my screen before it happened.
I remember one of my video card dying and having stripes like if I was going lightspeed just like in spaceball =)
I certainly hope its not my video card because its brand new. Also I might try and buy a new monitor to see if that would resolve my issue, I heard some problem between amd Radeon and Benq monitor, is that still going on?
Here is my system config

1. See the my last post in that thread I linked to above. I wrote out all the steps.
2. Ya, not good. I've never seen anything like that.
3. I would just borrow one or swap one (both systems still have a monitor that way ... and you can see where problem goes)
4. No, never heard that. Supply URL Link.

Clean installed AMD Catalyst. Didn't resolved my issue, I get bugs in the display now before it goes black,
Here is an exemple while playing Everquest (yeah old school I know lol)
Then just a few sec after close the preview equipment
What could cause that problem? Is the video card defective or its not well seated?
I'm bringing a monitor from work tonite to test it out, but I dont see this as being a faulty monitor do you?
The monitor also goes black when playing PlanetSide2, so its not just because the game is outdated.
Couldnt find the URL for the Benq problem.
Thank you so much for your time, its very frustrating on a brand new system =(

Possibly, but not likely since Windows and/or Catalyst is not complaining or throwing an error.
That's why, as basic trouble-shooting, you find out if the problem is in the monitor or PC. Narrow the problem to one machine or the other.

Of course I do ... that's why I am trying to help you.
You have the system there ... You just trouble-shoot the problem ... I'm way over here.

So you don't have any idea what it could be? Wouldnt that be something the graphic card does, because the rest of the graphics on the monitor looks fine.
Ran a GPU and my graphic cards is at 62 C steady, maybe I should open a ticket with dell for the to come change my card.
Thank you

This only happened since I clean install Catalyst. The inventory isn't what triggered it, its the preview item windows, it first went black like this, then it went into sleep mode (amber light on screen, screen all black) for about 2 seconds the it came back to normal, but still had the black ground all over the place. After closing the preview window it went back to normal as the 2nd screenshot show. Then I tried doing the preview item again and it repeated, minus the screen going in sleep mode. That only happened in this particular instance, but I could repeat it over and over, but it only went in sleep once after the first time.
In other zones the preview didnt bring the black ground. But the sleep mode keep coming randomly, sometime every 10 minute or so and sometime it could take an hour or more before coming in.
The Black screen (amber light on monitor) Also happens while playing other game, such as Planetside2. Didnt get any other display glitch in Planetside2, except the monitor going off for a few second.
I guess i should look for the latest Direct-X? I run everquest with full graphics and everything. I didnt change any graphic in Planetside2 yet but I will probably put it all in max.
Tonite I will see with the new monitor and maybe I will open and make sure the connection and the card is seated properly.
Let me know what you think

With these screen shots, you never said what the problem is. Are you trying to show the ground being black when inventory is open?
If so, that is different than what you have been describing. That points to more of a driver or Direct-X problem ... requiring a game .ini or video-options tweak or patch ... often required to get an old game to run on a new computer.

No, not really. Windows-7 comes with a fairly new version (DirectX-11.0) already, as part of the core OS.
Sounds like you are playing "Free-To-Play" games from Steam ... which is fine.
When you install a newer game (like PlanetSide2) it will update your Direct-X (as part of the game install) to the level it needs. If it finds the Direct-X level already installed is newer than what it's trying to install, it will usually do nothing (because all Direct-X is suppose to be back-wards compatible ... back to 9.x anyway).
When you install an old game, it does a similar thing during install. It might deposit some older files for compatibility (if they are missing), but it doesn't change the Direct-X version.
You can run DXDiag to view your Direct-X status. Should be DirectX-11, and all tabs should say "No Problems Found" at the bottom.

They are only "free-to-play" unless you are suscribed =P
When I installed Planetside2, it did update my direct X so I guess we take it out of the way.
I will try DXDiag as well but as you said, its probably fine.
I am pretty sure with all this narrowing down that the monitor is faulty or the graphic card, tonite I will set the record straight by first trying a new monitor and then if it still happens, I will check all video card connection. If at the point it still happens, I guess we can assume its the card right?
Thank you
