My alienfx on my 15R3 only works when the laptop is plugged in. Please help!
The lights come on when it boots up, but then turns off after that

Try this. In low right open up the Action Center. You will see the icon for Alienware FX lights. Right click on it and select NEVER. This will keep the lights on.
