New AW Aurora R4 Fan/Lights + Rear USB Problems
Hello,
I'm currently having issues with my new Alienware Aurora R4, it is only 5 months old and I have performed no hardware modifications to my machine.
The issue seems to happen randomly, and not specific to operating certain task, I have witness it happening while playing games and while surfing the web.
What happens is....:
-The Alien FX lights will blink while....
-The Fans rev up periodicaly while the lights blink, and then it cuts out, and then it revs up again.... and cuts out non stop.
-The usb on the rear ports specifically where my mouse and keyboard are plugged will cease to work even disconnecting + reconnecting doesnt get them back, but windows will make the theme noise of a usb device being detected.
(Tested : Rear USB ports make windows theme noise when plugged but dont work, my G500 mouse for example the lights on it will blink, however the USB 3.0 on rear does work.)
-The computer continues to functions as per normal except that the fan revs up and the lights blink
- I have been able to to get keyboard and mouse back by plugging into the front usb ports.
-The fans according to thermal controls are bouncing between 1% - 48% on PCI Fan Unreliably, hard drive seems constant at 29%
- Since I have let it run like this while writing this post the fan stayed at 55% for both PCI and HD for a solid minute until it returned to its current state.
-Note that the computer seems to return to normal after it is shutdown, USB ports on the rear function normally after reboot.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
I really need help, this is a new rig that I'm very proud of and now its just disappointing how its starting to flake on me.
I originally had BIOS Ver. A03, I've tried reseting the MIO board, and updating Alienware Commander which the only result was the PC would shut itself down randomly. I've also changed electric outlets to see if it would help... it did not.
I've since updated the BIOS to Ver. A06, the PC has not shut itself down yet, but it seems the issue persists, what can I do?

Back after a reboot to note a few things.
-Yes the PC fan/lights have returned to normal after a reboot, but this seems to happening a lot lately and has me worried.
-The PC was not overheating, temperatures for all 3 sensors were at 27 degrees. Same temperature after reboot.
-Current normal stats in Thermal Controls are : CPU Pump is running, System Fan: ~1194 RPM, PCI Fan : ~1513 RPM (1%), HD Fan : ~1094 RPM (29%)

Sounds like you are having problems with the USB ports (which would also effect the MIO-Board).
Flakely motherboard I would say ... Unless you have something weird on the USB ports holding them down.
The preferred ports for keyboard and mouse is usually the back ones... the USB-2 ones
Is the machine getting plenty of power (preferably through a good UPS (like a APC)?

Hey Tesla1856,
For the USB-2 ports, nothing fancy standard usb cable mouse and keyboard, as for power I'd like to think the machine is getting enough power though not on a UPS but on a regular surge protector, I've since temporarily switched directly to the wall outlet to see if UPS was at fault but to no avail. Is there something I'm not getting here?
Like could power fluctuations be causing this issue even though the rest of machine is still functioning?
You might be on to something with USB ports though.

I am currently using the R3 and coming across this problem. I really would like to know any answers. I am considering buying a new Mo-Bo, but it could also be a PSU problem. I would like to see if anyone has anymore suggestions.

I just got a brand new R4 and it wouldn't start when I received it - 3 technicians later, it is up and running, but I am having the exact same issue. The fan keeps revving up and down and all of my usb 2 ports are non-responsive (front & rear). The only thing I have been able to do is reboot, but that is very inconvenient in the middle of raiding (dragons) with 23 other people. The diagnostics are all passing, so I can't figure out what could be causing the issue. I have Windows 8 (haven't upgraded to 8.1) and have the most recent bios but can't check it since it just started again while I was writing this post. Any ideas would be appreciated. The technicians installed 2 brand new nvidia geforce gtx 680 cards a new motherboard and all new memory.

Well, I did find something, since you are having the problem I will tell you what my problem was. The Razer Synaptic Program was not getting along with my Logitech Gaming Software drivers. So what I did was removed Logitech Gaming Software from my startup programs list, and start it up manually after Razer Synaptic has fully booted. I can't say that these specific programs are your problem, but seeing as how we have a similar issue, I would say remove all 3rd party programs from your startup programs list and try to add 1 back every reboot you do. Sounds tedious but it beats the <ADMIN NOTE: Substitute character removed as per TOU>
out of this problem.

Part of the issue was my Logitech mouse and also the Logitech gaming software is also an issue. I swapped to a razer mouse and had no issues. I separately tested the software and found it too would cause the usb ports to stop functioning. I haven't had an issue since I uninstalled my Logitech gaming software and switched to a non-logitech mouse. The only downside is now I can't program my g510 keyboard.
edit: Btw - this was at the prompting of the Alienware support person - to change out my mouse. She indicated other people had the same issue with logitech mice and Alienware mice (which are made by Logitech btw).
