No support for M18X R2 and Windows 10

So I attempted to upgrade to Windows 10 and successfully got it to load after a few attempts.  Then my problems started with Windows 10 coming up with all sorts of excuses for restarting my laptop over and over.  I'm in the process of restoring the system image I made before the upgrade right now.

Imagine my surprise (or lack of surprise) when I visit this site and find that Dell is not supporting the upgrade of my M18X R2 laptop that I bought direct from them on 2/21/2013 with a warranty that doesn't expire for another 6 months.  I bought and paid over $5,000 for a laptop that Dell seems to no longer support.

I want a full refund for my unsupported laptop.  I have a 5 year old PC that had no problem at all upgrading to Windows 10.  My 2.5 year old top of the line laptop from Dell cannot be upgraded?  The people at Dell who made this decision need to be fired.

Hello Oldmanbill,

I can understand your frustration since I own 2 M17xR4 laptops myself. My warranty runs out in 2017. After many attempts and some help from another laptop owner I did get my laptop to operate. Like you I didn't know about Dell deciding not to support the Windows 10 upgrade for my machine.

It would have been nice if they could have sent this information to Microsoft about some models will not be supported even though the notice from Microsoft said the Windows 10 upgrade is ready.

A letter from Dell to computer owners that missed the cutoff period would have gone along way stating they were not officially supporting the upgrade.

I also would like to know the various reasons that our Alienware laptops are not supported since they are supposed to be highly upgradeable even a cave man can do it.

Was your upgrade path from Windows 7 or 8?  The only thing that I needed to update to the latest was Intel RST on my Windows 7.  All other devices were running the latest manufacturer drivers.  I just did that.  Will system image it again and try to upgrade to Windows 10 again.

he was upgrading from windows7, I was the one that directed him the proper path somewhat, if upgrading form 7 you will need to get the 8 drivers...  I have a M18X R2  that upgraded from windows 8  and had no issues what so ever .. 8 drivers work with it fine...

as for not supporting a new operating system, not sure they actually are required on a 3 year old system . I own one so don't think I don't feel your pain but to be honest..  its like asking why my brand new jeep wont support  the new diesel without severe mods.. I want my money 54k back for that!

I'm going to start off by upgrading from windows 7 to windows 8.1 to see if that makes upgrading to windows 10 any easier.  I'll download all the 8.1 drivers from Dell and install them before I try to go to windows 10.

Actually after a little more research I'm going to update to Windows 8 first so that all my applications carry over and do not need to be reinstalled.  Then upgrade to windows 8.1 (loading all the Dell drivers for 8.1) and then to Windows 10.  Have to wait until Monday though since the key (Windows 8 $63) I bought on Amazon won't come until then.

I loaded all of the Dell provided Windows 8.1 drivers onto my system and then upgraded (for the 4th time) to Windows 10.  Still got BSOD restarts but less frequently than when the new drivers weren't loaded.  Wasted enough time trying to get Windows 10 on this Laptop.  It's on EBay for the next 3 days for less than 1/3 of what I paid for it.

It was a good laptop but not being able to easily upgrade to the latest operating system when the 7 year old HP it replaced loaded Windows 10 without a hitch has forced me to come to the decision never to buy a Dell product in the future.

Same happened with my m17x Dell strung me along...upgraded me to an m18x that also didn't work and then strung me along...countless days on the phone with tech support...me begging for a refund because their product was a dud...here I am 7 years later with a computer that doesn't recognize its discrete GPUs and $5000+ down the drain. I was a college student at the time and this laptop began my financial woes. I hate DELL and ALIENWARE now. Never again.
