Possible Alienware X51 R1 GPU upgrade
Hi all,
I've had a quick flick through the site and across the web but not really been able to find a solid answer to my question so I figured it was best to ask.
I've currently got a X51 R1 with the only parts I've changed being, swapping the 1TB HDD for a 3TB and adding a 250GB SSD but I'm thinking about improving the GPU. I've currently got the GTX 555 still in there and I was quite interested in the GTX 760 retail. I'm unsure if the 170W is a bit too much for the PSU to handle though.
So, would it be possible to put a GTX760 retail in the X51? If not, what would people recommend? I was thinking 660 but I've seen 760s at similar prices to 660s so it would annoy me to lose out on the better card.
Many thanks for any help! It's much appreciated!!!

Hi ThermidorFallen,
If you are using a 330W power supply Dell has already tested Alienware X51 system with GTX 660 video card. However, though GTX 760 can be fitted in to the GPU slot of your system we are not sure about the compatibility as it requires a higher power supply (500W as per NVidia ), which may also lead to additional expenditure for higher power supply.
If you have any other questions do reply to the same thread.

I had been using this website to calculate how much power I need for my power supply, I hope this will help you.
You will need to fill out the empty spots so it can calculate how much power your computer needs.

Thanks for the quick reply Kiran!! This is the part that I'm really struggling to find an answer to.
The GTX 555 has a 150W maximum card power whereas the 660 has a 140W maximum card power and a 450W recommended power requirement. So if the 660 Retail works at 450W recommended, is the 760 going to be pushing it too much at 500W recommended and 170W card power?
Or is it worth me investing in a power meter, putting my X51 through a stress test and seeing if the power use leaves around 30W or so for the jump between the 555 and 760 maximum power?
Many thanks for the help!

Hi ThermidorFallen,
You may try stress test exercise as mentioned by you. However we have not tested a 760 card on this computer.
Do let us know about the outcome.

Sorry to bring this up again. I haven't had chance to test a 760 card in my PC (or do the stress test exercise) but the 760 TI has the same power consumption as the 760 Retail. The only difference between the new high end X51 and mine in power consumption (as far as I can tell) is a 10W max difference in the CPU. Surely then I shouldn't have any major problems with the 760?
Sorry again, it's just I would really like an answer before buying a card and finding out I can't use it haha.

Hi ThermidorFallen,
The 10W power will not make a big difference. However, if any application/ program which may use the video card to its full load then it may damage the video card. In this situation you may have to upgrade the power supply.

Ah, that was what I was worried about.
Just out of curiosity, how does the new top end X51 (with 760 TI, SSD and HDD and i7) cope under full load? Does it have something in place to limit the power use below 330? or do the parts just drop shy of 330W under full load?

Just use it they put this card in the new R2 version of this pc and the power supply is still 330 watz there is to my knowledge no difference between that 330 watt power supply and the one we have.
