Reviving Alienware M15X (Upgrading GPU or CPU)

Hi Guys,

I've been using my old obsolete Alienware M15X R2 for awhile now, and I notice my system's abit lagging when it comes to playing new games.(Battlefield 3, Oblivion, Skyrim, etc etc)

Here's what I have inside the Alienware M15X:

CPU : i7 740qm 1.73GHz (Up to 2.93GHz)

GPU : NVIDIA GTX 460M

RAM : 8gb 1333MHz

I have considered buying a new gaming laptop for awhile until I came across articles online saying that the GPU/CPU of the M15X are upgradable.

Hence the reason why i am writing this. Guys, I need help! Can anyone tell me if its true that the CPU or GPU in my Alienware M15X upgradable? If so, could I send it back to Dell and get them to do it for me? Or if I could, what type of CPU or GPU would my Alienware M15X be upgradable to? Is it worth while?

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Wick3D,

There is only one revision of the M15x. There is not an M15x-R2.
If so, could I send it back to Dell and get them to do it for me?
* No. we do not offer this service.

* Call Dell Spare Parts 1-800-357-3355 and ask for prices and availability. You could upgrade to any of these -
NTMDX 2.13GHz Clarksfield i7-940XM, 8MB, can only be used with 9 cell battery
JKJVH 2.00GHz Clarksfield i7-920XM, 8MB, 55W, can only be used with 9 cell battery
WX1DT 1.86GHz Clarksfield i7-840QM, 8MB, B1
K6654 AMD Radeon 5850m Broadway Pro

* Some users have added the Nvidia GeForce GTX470m and the AMD Radeon 6970m but these are not validated by us.

Hi Chris,

Thanks for the feedback =)

Now that i know my options, I guess I'm stuck in between the i7 920XM or the 940XM. I noticed that you specified 9cell batteries only, but if I use a 6cell battery it would still work right? Just that my battery lifespan wont be able to last me? Sorry for asking such questions as I'm still new at this....

At any rate, K6654 AMD Radeon 5850m Broadway Pro is not much of an upgrade for the NVIDIA GTX460M, (Based on reviews online and how it's rated by notebookcheck.com) So I guess I'll have to replace  it with a GTX470M or ATI 6970M. Just to be sure, I have one last question; Should anything goes wrong after I replace my graphics card (Burning my MOBO or PSU) Will my laptop still be covered by Dell's warranty? I do have a year + warranty ahead of me..
