Shocking ordering sales ordering system
Fail, fail, fail on Dell's part. Trying to buy new parts for Alienware is worst than having teeth extracted. 2 hours of phone calls and still can't get all the info I need.

spudmacvicar,
Please provide to me some details (without mentioning names or email addresses) of the Sales call.

2 Hours, that's it? I spend two hours just trying to get a hold of a customer service rep that speaks or understands english.

To be honest, Dell Spares was a joke for me too, I wanted to order a spare power supply; the 330w one, and was told many many times they didn't do one for the M18x, and I needed a 240w, and I was assured repeatedly the 240w was what I needed.
I'm not sure what would even happen to my M18x if I plugged a 240 in, but yeah was hard work.

Cenobitez,
The part number for the M18x 330w AC adapter is XM3C3.
spudmacvicar,
The X51 was never tested with a SSD so it does not surprise me that Sales was confused. The X51 parts page does not show any SSD. It only list these HDD -
7GPGH 1TB S3, 7.2K, 3.5", Samsung
8WDYM 1TB S3, 7.2K, 3.5", Seagate Pharaoh
9V4PG 1TB S3, 7.2K, 3.5', Western Digital XL500M
The Sales page Tech Specs tab states - "Hard Drive Up to 1000GB SATA hard drive (7200RPM)". The sales configurator does not allow you to choose an additional HDD or any SSD. The Owner's Manual does not mention adding a SSD. The specifications state, one internally accessible SATA hard drive.
Now, you could remove the Dell 1TB HDD and replace it with a SSD, but I do not know if it would mount properly in the drive bay.

I was after a memory upgrade & a new ssd for my area51 machine. couldn't find anything on the web, so reverted to chat - they couldn't help & told me to call sales number.
called sales number, and got transferred from dept to dept for 25 mins!!!!!
I hung up in frustration.
I flicked an email, and got a response. finally found out that dell do a ssd for my machine, but was only told price ($1400). needed more details so requested specs for ssd via email. no response.
reverted back to telephone sales - 40 mins on the phone, transferred from dept to dept. gave up.
phoned again, finally got through to somebody after 25 mins - only to be told that dell can't provide specs for the ssd.
how pathetic. how can dell expect somebody to pay $1400 for a ssd without comparison against other brands.
and the use of foreign call centers is also frustrating. rubbish lines from australia and the personnel need more training in speaking english.

Chris M,
I have an Area51 ALX machine, not a X51.
Confused is one description for the sales force, but not the one that I would use.

Area-51 RAM:
en.community.dell.com/.../19353401.aspx
or www.crucial.com
Watch compatibility closely. DDR3 and Tri-Channel (exactly matched sets of 3)
On x58 chipset 1333 is the most compatible IIRC.
For the SSD
Get a good name brand one: Intel, Crucial, Samsung, OCZ, etc . Google for reviews.
From Amazon or Newegg or even Dell's retail online site (not spare parts ... no reason to ... they are generic)

Nice one Chris M, given what I have previously said, why would I?
