Should I get an m14x R2??
OK I am hearing a lot of mixed reviews about this product, generally a great piece of kit but apparently not for long... This concerns me as the price is hardly cheap enough to risk. I hear that the system fails after days, the keys touch the screen which is also too glossy, I have heard that the construction of the product is also debatable. There are tones more to go over but you get the idea... Apart from those issues a lot of people are having trouble getting the help they need.
I like Alienware but I have never owned or really worked on one, but too many people are telling me I am buying a label... Not one to conform to social convention I can't help but think they may be right... I have been comparing a lot of portable gaming spec laptops and I am getting a few suggestions to other brands etc... I would like to be part of the Alienware bandwagon but my ideal spec will cost £1200. As a gambler that's too much for me and I want to fold based on the odds of failure... I would expect a DELL product to last me a good while with proper care yet I can't help but think they are throwing together as many computers as possible to get the cash in...
I am hoping to find a few people that OWN AND USE an m14x to give me some feedback on the pros... I don't really care about how pretty it is I am need REAL WORLD experience about performance... eg, exactly how much space do I get AFTER everything is installed, will it work if it is on for say 2 days straight without blowing up or such issues. I could do with individual spec set ups too so I know how much i should spend and whether low HDD will affect the performance etc.
Put simply I will not spend 1200 quid on a weeks worth of usage to have to send it back, complain again, send it back, and on and on and on... am I better off looking elsewhere? PLEASE HELP!

I agree with the keys and handling, I can imagine a few of them are caring badly for them. The glossy screen shouldn't affect me much anyway but it was a common problem and I wanted a serious opinion of how it impacted usage.
It looks like you have gone for a similar set up to what I am considering.
Personally I can deal with a slow start up as long as it runs smoothly and efficiently.
I also agree with forum responses, a lot of people like to whinge about issues but I work in a very customer focused job so I see the benefit in positive feedback,
Thanks for your help,
Still up for debate though guys :)

I haven't had any issues with mine and I've had it since december. There was an issue with the A09 bios causing the nvidia card to not be detected. This issue has been resolved.
I have a M15x as well and the quality on the M14x is excellent just like the M15x.
The keys do not touch the screen. This is a very debatable issue because people handle their machines differently, they pack them into bags differently. I don't lug mine around, it gets closed and left sitting on my laptop cooler.
The screen is glossy, frankly I don't understand why they use a gloss screen these days but they do sell matte protector which is supposed to be ok. My M15x has a glossy screen too and I've just gotten used to it on both machines so it's not an issue for me.
This machine is fast, real fast. This also depends on the options you choose. Get the most machine you can afford. I opted for a nice I7 3630. Performance has been spectacular. Frankly I couldn't be happier.
I'm not sure what you mean by low hdd affecting performance but I opted for a 7200RPM sata 3 drive instead of the more expensive ssd. For me it wasn't worth the extra hassle to cost ratio. For me the lower cost and less hassle of the 7200RPM SATA drives is worth the performance trade off. Yes with windows loads 3 seconds slower and I could load my virtual machines a little faster but I don't care. Also I can swap it out later if I want, I could add a msata drive at any time if I need that little bit extra.
One more thing, People generally come to the internet/forums to look for help or to complain about problems they are having; rarely do they pop on to say "yay I got this new toy and it's awesome and I have zero issues with it".

I have 2 of them. A 10 month old R1 and a 2 month old R2, both loaded. No issues.
OP, remember that a certain percentage of ANYTHING sold will be defective for some reason or another. No matter the brand or company. It would be my guess that for every "Oh noes its broken" post, there are a thousand shipments that have no problems, therefore people do not come to the forums.
Then you have to take in to account the people that are too new to own a computer "my laptop wont run for an hour solid on battery playing Crysis 3" type users for example.
Then you have the liars that have messed up thier machine and are trying to scam Dell by claiming a defect to get a new machine.
So buy whatever you want. The odds are in your favour that it will be trouble free no matter which manufacturer you choose.
By the way, my R2 in black is much nicer looking than my red R1 (in my opinion).

I have a black M14x and a Red M15x. The wife is using the M15x now hehe. The black on the M14x is so nice. It's different though, it's a rubber type feel. It's awesome.
