Trouble with booting from cd
Hi, new to the forum. :)
Having a bit of an issue booting from a cd. Seems there are two methods to choose from in the bios, UEFI or legacy. If I choose UEFI the system will not boot from cd, its not even a choice when pressing F12 on boot up. If I set the system to legacy, it will boot from a cd but no longer sees the hard drive as a boot device. I have the boot order set to 1 cd/dvd 2 hard drive. This is on an aurora R4 by the way.
Thanks

Hello dbritton25, UEFI will give the option to boot from DVD. What software are you trying to run? Windows will usually ask you to 'Press any key to continue' and it goes really fast. Here is big guide that could also help.
With Legacy you wont see the HDD's until you reinstall Windows on it; so the Hard Drive will change from UEFI to Legacy.

I was using ghost 15 to make an image of my C drive, it is a bootable disk, the system will only boot to this disk under the legacy setting. The system will only boot off the hard drive (which already has win 7 installed) if the system is set to UEFI.
I have the boot preference set to cd/dvd first, then HDD second.
Setting the system to legacy with the cd in, it automatically boots to the cd, the system does not give a choice. If I try to boot the system without the cd in, the system does not see the HDD as a boot drive, I get message saying that a boot drive does not exist. Pressing F12 at boot, the cd/dvd drive is listed but not the HDD.
Setting the system to UEFI, the system boots to windows (off the HDD) even if I have the bootable cd in its drive and does not give any choice of booting from cd/dvd. Pressing F12 at boot the HDD is listed but not the cd/dvd drive.
The desired effect (that exists on my old alienware pc) is that when I have a bootable cd it the drive, the system will ask if I want to boot off the cd, after 30 seconds or so of no response, it will just boot off the HDD.

Thank you, pretty much Legacy and UEFI are not compatible at all. So you need to decide what to do. Either format the HDD with Legacy or with UEFI

Yes, remove Ghost from equation and work the problem with the bootable genuine Win7-64 DVD-ROM.
Yes, your "desired effect" is correct. It should boot from the CD/DVD even when in UEFI mode.
Frank L. will have to work this problem with you (I don't have access to an UEFI enabled Aurora R4).

Frank, with all due respect ... while your statement is likely true, I think it is irrelevant.
The user simply needs to be able to boot from the genuine Win7-64 DVD-ROM. His system happens to be set to UEFI mode (the default way it comes from Dell). He doesn't wish to change that.
It seems to me to be a very simple and reasonable request.

You are welcome ... and if you are happy with the work-around that's all that matters.
However, I still don't see why you shouldn't be allowed to leave it UEFI mode, and still boot the Win7-64 DVD-ROM.

Ok, I tried the win7 cd and it does in fact allow the system to boot to that cd. I guess if I ever need to do a restore I have to go into the bios and switch it over to legacy first, before I can boot to the ghost cd. But I rarely need to do that so I suppose I can live with that. Tried to reburn the ghost iso on the new machine just to see if that made a difference, it didn't..
Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

Oh no, you misunderstood. In UEFI mode, I can boot to the win7 disk, but it does not see the ghost disk as bootable for some reason. I would like it to see both but its not..

Now I'm wondering if the monthly images that I have been making, will even be usable to restore from. It might be time to find a new disk imaging solution.

Good question ... backups aren't much use if they don't work
Especially if you think you are safe.
As cool as UEFI is ... it's thrown a wrench into many HDD cloning and imaging softwares. Seems like the industry is still trying to catch up. I'm pretty sure that is why your machine doesn't have DafeSafeLocal (Alien ReSpawn) installed.

Just found out win 7 has a built in disk image program. I'll give that a go until the next version of ghost comes out. Tried Acronis in the past and didn't really care for it. Glad I found all this out before I needed a restore. Found it out by accident, I was trying to find a usb port I could use that the system would recognize before it booted into windows so I could access the bios. (Another annoyance of my new pc) :)
