Upgrading the graphics card on my Alienware X51 R2

Hi,

I am currently investigating to determine whether or not I can upgrade my Alienware X51 R2. My current specs are:

- Memory =  8GB Dual Channel DDR3 at 1600Mhz

- GPU =  1GB GDDR5 NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 645

- Hard Drive = 1TB (64MB Cache) 7200 RPM SATA 6Gb/s

- Cable = UK 250V Power Cord

- Power Supply = 240W AC Adaptor

- Processor = 4th Generation Intel® Core™ i5-4440 Processor (6MB Cache, up to 3.3 GHz w/ Turbo Boost)

I am hoping to upgrade the graphics card, however I have no idea what my options would be with my other current specifications. I have read about people upgrading to a GTX 760 as it is able to fit into the x51 R2 chassis. However, I have read that I would need to upgrade to a 330W power supply. Is that correct?

I have read from various sources that the GTX 960 is a better option as it uses less power. Would I be able to run a GTX 960 with my current specs? And would it fit into the chassis?

Thanks in advanced,

The Nvidia reference GTX 960 is 9.5" long so it will fit. If you go to PNY, MSI, be sure to check the length, 9.5" is the maximum you can use. The card uses 120w so the 240w AC adapter should work. But you could always buy the 330w AC adapter if it does not. You could also double the memory.

330w AC adapter = Y90RR
16GB memory = two 66GKY

Thank you for the rapid response!

Based off of your advice I have done some searching and found a Gigabyte GeForce GTX 960 (www.novatech.co.uk/.../gv-n960ixoc-2gd.html)

The dimensions (LxHxW) are 168mm x 121mm x 36mm so well within the 9.5" length. However, it does seem like quite a thick card. Does the X51 R2 have room to accommodate that depth? or is a thinner card required?

Thanks!

That is a standard dual width card. It will fit into the riser card assembly.

Hi Chris,

which of the current generation Nvidia 1060 / AMD RX 480 would you recommend?

I had my son's X51 R2 with the seller for some time, they've tried few Nvidia based cards, none fit at the end, as the real dimensions did not correspond with the claimed ones.

Many thanks,

Ondrej
