Welcome to the erra of new hardware the ati cards when they get hot and thier fans actually really rev up becomes a loud whine. Your solution better case fans, re-applying tim if the gpu is getting too hot, or purchase a noise dampening kit, you can get them on newegg for about 12-16 dollars or so last i checked, keeps my GTX 480 noise levels down I just hear my case fans the air rushing though the front and the air being pushed out the back. Might be worth a shot for you to buy a kit. But ati's vapor chambers tend to do that once the fans rev up. Plus side of them less power and heat generated.

I have the same card, and while it picks up a little during heavy gaming, I surely wouldn't call it loud.

What does CC say the temp. is on Ambient Sensor 2? Maybe even do some heavy gaming then jump out and check it quickly.

Be sure PCI Fan is still set to use Ambient Sensor 2. I use Manual Curve. If the PCI Fan is doing it's job, it should keep the 5870's fan from working so hard.
